Hello,

I just started testing the waters with my new HD 4890, but the scores seem low I am guessing my CPU is the bottleneck but need to know for sure.

So i have a new vista SP1 32 bit install on a 60gb partition on a new Seagate 7200.12 500gb drive
I have a Q6600 clocked at 3.6Ghz
and 2GB of Patriot Ram running at 960Mhz DDR2
The clocks on the HD4890 are at stock.

And in 3DMark06 I only get a score of : 14444 points

and in 3D Mark Vantage i only get P7400 points

PSU is a corsair TX750 watts, I got this because it has 1 x 12v rail with 60 frigging Amps giving out 720 of the watts.

So I don't get it

UPDATE:
I updated my BIOS to version 13f
and it increased only my 3D Mark Vantage score to P8700 points

my 3d mark 06 score and my games fps' remained the same

so what's up with DAT?

What games are you running? I guess you would be running 1650x1080 res? what fps are you getting?

XFX 4890 low benches

I am using a rez of 1920 x 1200

an example of FPS in Crysis with these ATC CCC settings:
"ATI Driver Settings:
AA = 4x
AAA = OFF
AF = 16x
AI = Advanced
MipMap = High Quality"

I get an average 16 FPS

with these settings:
AA & AAA = OFF
AF = 8x
AI = Advanced
MipMap = Performance"

I should be hitting close to 25 FPS (from what I have seen on other websites and I have taken the CPU in account)

But I only get 18 FPS

I see your running Vista 32 and 2GB of ram. How many times is your RAM capped, I have a feeling when your benching your dipping into virtual memory and it's killing your score. With your OC and GPU you should probably be seeing 16k if not more.

Still a 14.4k with a quad core at 3.6ghz and a 4890, thats a pretty low score.

Difference is, he is running 600mhz more on the CPU. But that is a big drop, it doesn't make any sense as I think I have seen 4870's bench higher on stock 940's than that. Why woudl changing the VRM area and the board design effect performance when not OCing the GPU as it's still the same GPU and RAM on the board.

Xfx isn't using the ATI reference pcb any more... something has changed on there end...I just ran a test with the shitty gpu as the master and the good gpu in the bottom slave position.... I get not bad scores but reverse the cards and it totally blows!
Im also testing with the cpu cranked up to 3.8ghz

I am thinking now maybe it's because my mobo 's PCI-E slot is 1.1

Would it make a difference if my mobo had a PCI-E 2.0 slot?

Nope, the PCI-E 1.0 X16 slot = 2.0 X8 slot hardly bottlenecks even the 5870.

I just got a new gpu back yesterday (and fast too) took 2 weeks exactly from XFX rma and they sent me a 900mhz model instead of the 850mhz model I sent them :D
HD-489A-ZDFC but its a Version 1.1.... it has the black board and has one 6 pin and one 8 pin power connectors... also has the 4 led's and besides the power connectors and color... it looks exactly like my ati reference card :D.... time to take it on a stock mark06 run...

It doesn't matter since both will run at 850 unless you overclock the 850 to 900mhz

That's what you get for bitching and threatening them by telling them I'm going with a different manufacture lol...

LOL... I sent them a really disappointed message stating that their tech support SUCKS and that I might not buy another XFX product again.... They received it Monday, and I got it Thursday of the same week... But I honestly might not buy another XFX product again...:shadedshu

Put the more powerful card in the top slot.

And yes, 3dMark likes high OC's on the CPU. Idk, 3dMark 06 is getting on four years old now. It's time to move on to another benchmark. ;) Plus if you are really just looking for high 06' marks, you should go with an Intel CPU and Nvidia cards.

I was just going to pm you about that Eroc.... thanks... I have the XXX gpu in the top slot and just clocked the other to match it.... Does that work ok? or leave it at stock 850mhz and leave the xxx at its stock 900mhz clock?

If the other card can do 900mhz, by all means have it run at that.

Im just compairing marks in order to see the difference between bith marks.... Before I go on O/C'n the cpu I had better run Vantage to get its difference in scores...
