MSI HD4850 OC'ed version 110 degrees hot

Since a short time my MSI HD4850 OC'ed version is 77 degrees celcius idle (while just browsing the web) and 110 degrees celcius when playing a game. Is this too much and how can I solve it?

My other components are:

E8400 @ 3,6 Ghz (stock cooler)
MSI P43 Neo-F
Coolermaster Centurion 5 (80mm front fan, 120mm rear fan)
Antec Basiq 500 Watt

Thanks in advance

I'd check what the voltages say on GPU-Z style of tools trusting you got decent cooling on there and you don't live in bahamas. Now to think of it I'd check the GPU fan on those degrees also is it actually spinning.

if they are the real readings, i'd stop using the card until you figure out why it's that high, since it will just destroy itself.

This are some screenshots of GPU-Z and CCC:

Maybe it's the cooler on the card?

it might not be spinning at all, hence the astronomical temperatures. I would rma it asap ( the gpu monitor says that it is spinning, but its unlikely with those temperatures). Also, at those speeds you'd hear it. So put your ear by where the gpu is or put your hand by the outlet for the air, if you can hear the fan or feel hot air blowing out, it's still kicking. However it doesn't look like it's any good, so in any case, send it back.

I know that it's not a direct comparison, but my (overclocked to 900/1250) hd5870 runs idle at around 30-40C dependant on what fan setting im using (i use msi afterburner), and maxes at around 70C with a fan speed of 60% at most, so you can expect around 10-20C more than those temperatures at worst. The cards themselves can just about survive at about 105C, but it isn't a good idea, and you'll probably only get a 3 month lifetime out of it, so your load temps really are way past the boundary of what's safe.

I checked if the fan of the GPU is spinning and it is. I set the fan speed in CCC on 100% and I could hear it very loud and clear (too loud ofcourse).

So do I still have to RMA it, because I don't have a proof of purchase anymore. Or do I just have to buy a new card.

What to do now?

Dude, 70°C at idle is crazy. You could try removing the heatsink and replacing the thermal paste with something better, MX2, OCZ FReeze, AS5.

Also try adding another fan on it or improving your cable management to help increase air flow.

I have never removed the heatsink and replaced thermal paste. Could you give me exact instructions on how to do that?

And I can't add another fan because Centurion 5 only supports two fans (I know it sucks).

OUCH! mid 70's on idle for me would be unacceptable. My 4890 get into mid 70's running Furmark. Idle temp is 38.

Removing the cooler is not very complicated. Just a few screws holding it down. You have to propely clean both gpu an cooler with a high % alcool then you have to use quality thermal grease. Less than a grain of rice and spreading it eavenly with a plastic card on the gpu. Re attach the cooler and voila!

Do not expect miracles btw.

Reply with the EXACT model of your card, and a picture would even be great.

You could also Google your card model and get details on the heatsink removal.

This is the card I am talking about:

http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=pro...0&prod_no=1490

Maybe it's just better that I buy a new card, but which one should I buy? I want a bit more graphics power though...

Its a reference 4850, it is impossible to make a 4850 OC version with a reference deisgn (not safely anyways)
I have the HIS 4870 IceQ4 turbo and it idles at 50C with the fan barely spining, 70C is on the high side for even a referece 4850.
I will turn the fan higher and also check your case ventilation

Filling out your system spec will be alot of help.

Sure, you could buy a new card, but it sounds like your case doesn't flow much air. Blow that GPU HSF out. Then try pointing a decent fan at your GPU with the side-door off, load the GPU for a few minutes with an artifact scanner or Furmark, and observe temps.

You'll probably find adding a case fan to the side-door to blow on the card is the cheapest way to drop your GPU temps. Get a 120mm fan, a "nibbler", and a fan grille to hide the hole you'd use the "nibbler" to make in the side-door. Consider putting one up in the case roof, to help exhaust.

Hope this helps.

The case sucks to be honest. It only has a 80mm front fan and an 120mm rear exhaust fan. So yeah the airflow is not so good.

I'm talking about the Cooler Master Centurion 5 Silver/Black version.

Also my other specs are:

E8400 @ 3,6 Ghz with stock cooler.
MSI P43-Neo-F
Antec 500 Watt Basiq (makes noise like hell)
WD 640GB Black
Cooler Master Centurion 5

My CPU does 60 degrees celcius when it is at full load so I think that is acceptable.

I also don't mind buying a new case since it's time to upgrade anyways. Which case would you recommend?

Thanks for the great help, love this forum

If you are a big fan for CM, everybdy and their Grany has a HAF932/922
What kind of case you are going after? Not everyone likes bigass cases.

The antec Twelve Hundred is good in ventilation, but quite pricy.
Silverstone also make some kickass cases. The Raven is a killer, but also pricey (If I can afford I will fall for it )
NZXT makes some gorgoes cases if looks is what you are after.

Also check out the Lancool Dragonlord cases.

The good thing if you decide to RMA through MSI is that they don't require proof of purchase and all that. As long as the manufacture date is within the warranty range, they'll most likely take it. You can start the process here:

http://www.msicomputer.com/msi_user/rmaform_p.aspx

Although they made an error in the card they replaced mine with, they fixed it without complaint and the process is relatively painless.

Okay so I think I have to send it RMA but I want a replacement card. I play games at a 1680 x 1050 resolution on a 20" BenQ Monitor.

Which card should I get?

And also which case should I get? It has to be quiet, have lots of ventilation. Also a lot of fans would be nice and a window would be nice too

I'm in the price range of € 80 - € 100 maximum.

Is it actually worth upgrading your graphics card when you have a P43 Mobo, 2GB DDR2 800 Mhz and E8400?

Thanks in advance

It shouldn't be that high though, i'm using a jeantech micro case with an 120mm intake and out-take and none of my components overheat whatsoever (my hd5870 never tops 70 anymore). Well, apart from my cpu once overclocked, but that's a different issue [stock cpu cooler never seems to cool it enough anymore, and it's not dusty or anything, and i've changed the thermal paste, so i need a new cpu cooler when i can get one ]

either an antec 300 or an antec 900-2 would be good choices, both provide very good ventilation, but the 900-2 is 'prettier' with lots of blue lights and a window.
