Basically I am new to all this stuff and I'm wondering, how hard is it to overclock on a low level?

I've heard these E6600s and this board can do wonders together, at the moment it's currently stock 2.4GHz

So basically, how do I work towards getting a higher clock without getting too technical?

Thanks :)

The lowest level of Overclocking is knowing the basics and recording what you have done once you have that understanding. Before you even start OC'ing, definitely take the time to read up on your motherboard - here is a good review that will help explain some of the options that you currently have no idea about.

Without trying to come across as patronising the basics for OC'ing are as follows.

To get the desired clock speed of your CPU - 2.4GHz (2400MHz) your CPU has a multiplier which is (obviously, hence the name) multiplied with the FSB (Front Side Bus) of your CPU. So, to get 2.4GHz the multiplier 9 x 266FSB gives you an end result of 2400MHz (well not exactly but it's rounded up.)

Now, usually the multiplier is locked so you can't increase it only decrease it - if you're unlucky enough to use have an unlocked CPU (the E6600 isn't unlocked unfortunately) then this would be the easiest way to OC your CPU. For example, if you increase the multiplier from 9 to 10 you get 2.66GHz.

As you don't have an unlocked multiplier, you'll need to slowly increase the FSB (the bus that carries data between the Northbridge & the CPU) - I personally work in 5MHz steps. So, keeping your multiplier at 9 increase your FSB from 266 to 271 (actually try 270 to start with). 9 x 270 = 2.43GHz.

Boot into Windows and check out your new clockspeed.

:rockout:

That's basically step one of the basics to OC'ing. You'll need to know the important factors that go along with OC'ing and they're all common sense really.

1.) You'll need reliable components - a decent heatsink & fan along with decent thermal paste.

2.) Decent air flow within the case covering the components that are going to be heating up - you don't want a build up of stagnant, warm air not being expelled from your case.

3.) Not to push components too far, small steps.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to come back to this as there is a lot more to OC'ing that just altering the OC settings within the BIOS - a lot more! Also, I'm at work.

Hmmm, well I would really love to get it past 3GHz

I got it to 2.8GHz and couldn't be bothered to go any further, I think that was 320x9

Obviously some other things are happening while I'm doing this that I'm unaware of which as you say, will be explained when you come back :D

2.8GHz is 400MHz increase - that's not to be sniffed at. Well done! You'll need to keep your eyes on the heat within your system, definitely download these...

CPU-Z - This will allow you to see everything you need to know about your CPU and little important bits regarding the motherboard & RAM. Indispensable utility.

&

HWMonitor - This will allow you to monitor all the voltages and temps within your system.

Hmm well idle has gone up about 5 or 6 degrees from 45ish to 51, but I'm using a terrible cooler and I didn't even apply new paste when I re-installed it cos I never buy stuff off the internet and there are no stores anywhere near here that sell anything actually useful when it comes to computing...

Yea I'll download those two things :)

While IC post is very helpful, 5mhz increase from stock is going to take you a long time, that chip will do 333fsb straight off, just bear in mind, when you raise the FSB you also raise the mem bus speed, you need to lower your memory multiplier if it cannot cope with the higher bus. Aside from that 333 will give you 3ghz with no problems at all, shouldnt even have to raise the vcore.

I am curious tho when you say 51c is that idle ? iirc the conroe based c2d like that had a tjmax of around 75c or so though this is from memory so I could be wrong, even so I would defo invest in a better air cooler or if thats not financially viable right at thbis minute then at the very least some good thermal paste, I recommend MX-2 personally.

Hmm well as you can see I put it down to stock for now, but I put the memory from 800MHz to 880 or 890MHz, I can't remember lol

But the temps for the CPU have stayed the same, then again as I said the cooling is terrible, however I can live with high temps, long as it works :p

I got my old E6600 to 3.1ghz on my gigabyte P43 board

9x345 is what it was and that was on stock voltage :) i could get it to 3.3ghz with a voltage bump but my 533mhz RAM slowed me down after that!

i might have some screen shots on my photo bucket if i havnt deleted it yet

High temps are what kill components and thats why you should learn about overclocking before just assuming it will be ok, no offense.

Like I said I am not sure and am too lazy to google the tjmax of your chip whilst I am on lunch but if the tjmax is around 75c as I suspect, 51c idle is too high, heck my i7 920 (monsterously hot) at 4ghz idles at 40c.

Once you start stressing that chip if its too hot you could damage it or run into stability issues

Hmm is there a way to make the CPU fan run at max speed?

Cos all my ASUS Q-Fan rubbish is turned off and that, so it won't interfere

But there's no way to manually set the fan speed as far as I can see :(

Cos surely putting it on max would aid the cooling, non?

If the q-fan setting is disabled in the bios it will be running at full speed, is it the stock cooler you have ?

Also upon googling some of the earlier E6*** chips tjmax were 70c namely the b2/b3/l2 steppings you seem to have a b2, which is an early revision of the E6600 :toast:

By the way, lower your ram multi or you will run into stability issues, its rated at 800 you have it at 910 atm, it may do 910 but to be sure and find your best stable oc I would lower it until you are happy with the cpu oc and then see if you can raise the ram multi a bit to find the best combo

This thing is lying to me then! :(

Sorry I don't know how to lower 'my ram multi' lol :(

Hmm in the readme for realtemp it says "TJ Target data released by Intel in 2008 at the IDF conferences does not accurately reflect the actual TJMax value for many 65nm processors."

Lol I put in some new thermal paste, some silicone arctic cooling stuff I had laying around, the temperatures have gone UP to about 56 at stock speed.

:/

And it's fastened in the same way it was before

Don't get me started on how to (properly) apply TIM.

Well don't worry, it was just a poo cooler anyways

I said to myself "I'm not having this..." and repaired the stock Intel reference cooler, so I'm using that instead

It's now running 43degrees celcius at idle, which is a lot better

Obviously it's not gonna be great cos it's only silicone paste :)

Do you think maybe later we can start overclocking the crap out of it? :D

I wouldn't with just a reference cooler tbh - maybe you could find the max OC with the FSB and then start fiddling with your RAM?
