Basically I've just got a PSU of 550W, better than my 480W for the W rating obviously

It's a cheaper generic model but it has come from an OEM SLi system with exactly the same setup as mine other than the motherboard...

The power supply only has 20 pins for connecting to the motherboard, but my motherboard has a 24 pin socket...

Will it be stable if I just plug in this 20 pin power supply to my 24 pin socket?

Thanks

Go ahead it would work just fine guarantied 100% and no side effect buy running it like that.
If you are not comfortable running it like that for what ever reason you could buy adapter 20 to 24 pin from computer shop but wont do any difference IMO.

(Look back to that thread for previous posts)

OKay so, forget my last post in the other thread

"Hmm...

I've put it back to 3.0GHz and 1000MHz but I left the voltages on Auto this time around...

And it's booted with the Hiper 480W

This is strange cos it wasn't doing it earlier"

Cos it's not right...

It's dropped the Multi to x6 when not underload and the clock speed to 2.0GHz

But when I do something requiring load, it shoots to x9 Multi and the core speed goes to 3.0GHz

It never did this before :|

It's a power saving feature called C1E and SpeedStep. There are options in your bios to turn it off, though it's not necessary to do so.

Hmm, turned it on by itself though...

Which is weird

Turned it off now anywho

And now it boots while overclocked again

Think it was a problem with the memory

Ah well, computers are annoying and troublesome!

When oc'ing don't forget to turn off power saving options in the bios. They are stability whores. Btw, you might want to invest in a good psu. I onced used a cheapo, worked well for a couple of months then... Had a torrid time diagnosing the problem. Even Thought that my gpu was giving out. So stay away from em.

i've got to agree with assaulter_99
get yourself a good psu, it is after all the heart of your pc,
i used a cheapy for ages and all i got for my troubles was blue screens of death, not on everything just a few games, i couldn't even do any benchmark tests as the psu wasn't stable enough to run any version of 3dmark ,plus when i decided to clean it, my mains capacitors where bubbling from the top
(probably would have gone with a big bang and taken half if not all of my old system with it if i hadn't changed it)
my new psu (corsair hx650w) has the extra pins you would need attached to the 20 pin socket (unhookable)so if this old gal dies(which has a 20 pin socket motherboard) i can still use it in something else which is always a bonus:D plus it comes with a gigantic 7 year warranty faint thud.gif

wattage means little, as one 500W PSU may have less power where its needed than another (and one brands 450W may be as good as another brands 600W)

you should always get a quality PSU, and you shouldnt leave the extra power sockets empty, even if the PC works

If you are not comfortable running it like that for what ever reason you could buy adapter 20 to 24 pin from computer shop but wont do any difference IMO.

Q: If it makes no difference, why are there 4 extra pins?
A: High end hardware uses more power, the 4 extra ways help distributing the power over multiple wires.

Q: Why is this important?
A: The higher the amperage the higher the temperature, more wires result in less power per wire.

Q: What could happen if too much power goes through a single wire?
A: The wire can melt, things short, *poof*.

Specially when overclocking quad cores or when using dual CPU systems it is not recommended to use 20 pin connectors.

i think overclocking itself is not recommended by those people
