another silly noob q9550 overclocking question

i never overclocked anything and i really not looking to do it now but i want to give my rig a "little" kick if i can.

i would like to bump my 2.8 up to at least around 3.4 if it can be done as a "set these numbers and thats it" kind of overclock.

if i have to watch temps and monitor voltages and change settings after bootup then thats not what im looking for.

my specs are listed and i have a well vented case that never gets above room temp the way it is now.

cpu-z specs:
core voltage= 1.104
dram frequency= 533.3
core speed= 2000.0
multiplier= x6.0
bus speed= 333.4
fsb= 1333.3

Are you comfortable going into the BIOS?

If so, just change the FSB from 333MHz to 400MHz. (400*8.5=3400)

No other tweaks should be necessary.

thats what im looking for something like that, just a safe setting so im not pushing anything to worry about but i get as much as i can in sorta a stock setup

so just doing that will safely get me 3.4 with no stability issues?

Maybe bump the voltage from 1.1v to 1.15~1.2v for stability.

which should i use 1.15 or 1.2 or how can i tell which is better?

also does it say 3.4ghz somewhere on cpu-z or some other utility or is it something you just calculate in your head?

in cpu-z my core voltage fluctuates from 1.077 to 1.88 to 1.104 to 1.184 so should i take it off the auto detect settings in bios or let it do its own thing?

The voltage fluctiation is most likely caused by SpeedStep and C1E which are power saving features. They will also lower the CPU multiplier (hence the x6 multi you have) and the frequency. The easiest way to check the stock VID of your CPU is in RealTemp or CoreTemp. You could try 1.1v first and check for stability using LinX or OCCT. If it fails, bump it up to 1.15v

My 3.4 Q9550 E0 is @ 1.27 @ Load :eek:

, just upped the FSB to 400 strap + gave the RAM a little .1v boost and its all good. When I have the time I will see about lowering the Vcore- its a little high for this speed. OCCT stable 1hr30min WCG stable for months

VID is basically your CPU's stock voltage. It's listed in RealTemp: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1691/Real_Temp_3.40.html

Really, LinX is all you need since we are just working with your CPU. LinX is a stability program that will run your CPU at full load. You can get it here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=201670

dont know if any of this helps but i've collected some stuff trying to fix a hardware issue so i have these already:

artifact tester 5 (not too sure what this checks but its video related)
cinebench r10 (video card)
cpu-z (hardware monitor)
cpuid (hardware monitor)
rivatuner 224c (video card) - this says its not for my driver
perime95 (memory)
evga precision (video card)

and i'll download the two you suggested

ok real temp is showing my stock VID as 1.2250

so should i lower it? or is it already high enough? :confused:

update:

in bios i set cpu clock to 400 and it read 3.4ghz, i left voltages set on auto as bios recommended to do if i was overclocking and i exited and saved settings

system refused to boot and after 2 repeated boot crashes it automatically reset the cpu from the manual clock setting back to auto and the cpu frequency setting still read 400 but the cpu clock was back to the stock 2.83ghz

so it reset itself after crashing from being unstable

ok i found a motherboard overclocking utility from gigabyte called easytune 5 and used that to overclock it from the desktop and here are the results.

any setting i try above 2.9ghz is unstable and it wont boot if i only change the fsb

i tried 3.4, 3.3, 3.2, 3.1, and the computer froze up immediately

at 3.0 it saved the settings but after 25 seconds gave me the bsod

at 2.9 it saved without crashing and booted but i reset it back to stock because it makes no sence overclocking for a 0.007ghz gain

There is Easytune 6 now don't use easytune 5 & since you got a Gigabyte board in Bios Press CTRL + F1 will give you more options in Bios & put your CPU voltage higher like some said 1.5-2v don't use Auto on cpu voltage

EDIT:Sory! i miss type lol! i meant like everybody else said 1.15v-1.2v ,i dont know where my mind was when i wrote this :rolleyes:

according to the download page info it said easy tune 6 is not for the p35 board, only the easy tune 5 shows the p35 as compatable.

i will give it one more try with the 1.5

update:

i tried resetting cpu frequency to 400 @3.4ghz and tried these voltages, all with no success and it woulnt even boot up

1.5, 1.55, 1.65, 1.75, 1.8, 2.0

i then set frequency to 354 @ 3.0ghz at all the above voltages and it still would not boot

My q9650 needs 1.28 volts to run at 3400-3500mhz and it's stock at 3000. Try upping your voltage to around 1.3 volts. If your CPU is stable at 1.3, start lowering your voltage til you get a crash. Your CPU is rated for up to 1.37 volts by intel, and can handle plenty more than that for short periods of time.

dont run that high of voltages. 1.5 is about the highest I would run, and only for short periods of time

I do 4.16ghz on 1.46 volts. Absolutely no reason to go above 1.31 for ony 3.4ghz

check in your bois, look for the voltage for the RAM, what's it set at? I'm thinking your board is like mine where it automatically sets the RAM at 1.9 volts, even though I've used RAM that's needed 2.2 volts and 2.0 volts.

if so, that RAM is rated for 2.0-2.1 volts, set it's voltage to 2.1 in your bios.
