Card should be able to use EVGAtool or even GPUtool and have bios level fan control. TBH on all my Nvidia cards since my 9800GTX, the default bios settings does a pretty good job of keeping things under control. If things get too hot, pull the side panel and see if it helps. My 98's were hot, but I dont let that stop em from Folding@home at around 80 degrees

RivaTuner lets you turn the fan speed to whatever you want. But the fan speed increases by itself when there is load, so it's kinda pointless. It's loud as hell too. You don't want that jet engine running 100%, especially while idle, or with the side of your case off. I used to do it, I had an 8600GT in a plain vanilla case from 1999 with no side panel... that thing doubled as a space heater. 9800GTX+ is no better.

Hmm so taking the side panel off doesn't help then. Well that's a bummer.

it will help if the case is cramped and doesnt have good airflow.

These cards suck air from inside the case and spit it out the back so it's different. I don't see how taking off the side panel would help with that, except maybe if the card is taking in hot air from inside the case (and if your case is that hot then there is a problem).

Edit: Also, this is my 2nd BFG card and I will not buy BFG again. They are hot, loud, and bad overclockers.

From what I understand after doing extensive research, the 9800's generate alot of heat (depending on which brand it seems.) My questions are: How would I adjust the fan speed on my GPU? And would it be a good idea to open the side panel on my case and leave it open to allow better air circulation inside?

Thanks.

Depends on the cards actually. Mine's an xfx one and it comes with a zalman fan, never goes higher than 70-75 degrees.

lol same pic I looked at. If you removed the HDD bays at the bottom you might have a better chance.

FYI the PSU fan blows air into the PSU and out the back of the chassis, so it isnt blowing at the GPU, rather pulling heat from it, and through the PSU.

Also get out a tape measure, my 9800GTX+ is 10.5" long. Power down the rig and see what kind of room you have in line with the PCI-e slot.

use MSI afterburner to make a fan curve, but i have SLI XFX 9800gt EE @ 650/1650/1000 and fans locked at 38% load and idle on the stock cooler, load temps are about 65c-78C, idles at 53C

The HDD bays are at the other end of the case.

EDIT: Ahhh so the PSU will be taking in more heat than normal. That would be good for my card but potentionally hurting the PSU? I don't want any fire hazards.

The HDD bays if they are more than 10.5" from the far right side are fine. If they are closer they need to be removed/modded to make room for the card to fit. I assume thats a mATX motherboard in your case. these cards are longer than a ATX motherboard is wide.

Wouldnt worry about the PSU I was just making sure you understood its direction of airflow;)

HDD, that's the hard drive bays right? Cus those are in the bottom left of the case and if im not mistaken the PCI-E slot is near the bottom right? The red card is the stock 7300 LE nvidia card, wouldn't the 9800 go in the same slot?

yes but the card has to have room from the right edge of the case and 10.5 inches left of it to have room for a 9800GTX. I have no idea how big the case in the pic is, so I am just making sure this isnt a tiny case that wont allow the card to fit. DO me a favor. How big is the door opening from left to right.

can u measure from red line to red line on your case please?

Wait for edit of image.

Case is 17 inches long. The side panel is just under 16 inches.

About 16.5 inches.

Ok now by basic math you have a 3.5" drive rack that is at least 4" of that 16" so we are looking more like 12" from the hard drive rack to the right red line?

Ok one more question...does the PSU you just bought have the proper connections to power a 9800GTX...IIRC it takes 2 6-pin ones?

Ok...here is what my thoughts are....

1) it will fit
2) it will run on the warm side
3) removing the side panel while it is in action will lower your temps
4) @ $130 it is a vast improvement for gaming.
5) I am a bit suspect of the PSU at 500W, but if it is a quality PSU with strong ammperage, you should be good.
6) if it were mine, I would remove it all from that hot box and run it on my desk open air.

It's a 550 watt.

Thermaltake Black Widow 550w modular.

EDIT: Remove all of what? The GPU and the PSU?

I mean to pull everything out. That case is both tiny and really hard to get sufficient airflow into. If it were on a tech bench (which can be a cardboard box) or in a better case all together. Just out of that oven and onto a table is free, and why I suggested it.

I see. I don't know if I'm willing to do all of that. My best option I think would be to open up the side panel and leave it open, and maybe get an electric fan or something to blow inside it.

But just keeping it as cool as possible in my room I guess.
