Borderlands freezes and thaws

After upgrading (clean install) to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Borderlands frequently freezes and eventually unfreezes (the operating system is responsive but the game is not). I can still hear the audio and it sounds fine but everything in the game just stops like someone else hit "pause."

I am used the 9.12 Catalyst drivers for both XP and 7. I found a site that said stopping CCC helped resolve the issue, I did that, but it still freezes.

I am currently downloading 10.1 beta drivers but I doubt it will help.

Borderlands is version 1.2 (both DLCs installed).

Are you using your Creative sound card? Uninstall it and drivers and see if that helps. I've see too many problems where Vista/W7 Creative drivers cause problems.

it has happened to me a couple times too. I hit Control/alt/del, the screen goes black for a couple seconds that the game resumes.

I have a 5K series card and it runs no problem in W7 x64. I have a steam install of the game.

what antivirus do you problem people use? do you leave any apps open in the background? (firefox, for example) Do you use Xfire?

I think I may have fixed it but I'm not 100% certain yet.

I did a complete uninstall of the AMD/ATI drivers, downloaded, and installed the 10.1 beta pack; however, I only installed the critical components of the driver pack:
-Display Driver
-HDMI/DP driver
-AVAIO codec
-Install manager

Prior to upgrading to 10.1, I removed all user start up programs so CCC would not run. If this does in fact work, that means either the issue is resolved in 10.1 or CCC must be completely uninstalled for the game not to freeze/thaw. I don't use CCC for anything so this solution was acceptable to me.

as an example, i get micro-stutters if Firefox is running in the background due to it doing its 'save' feature in case it crashes.

Haven't tried 1.2 patch yet, using 1.01. Runs perfect for me... Under both XP64 and Win7 64. I'll have to try 1.2 and see what happens....
I think that's the patch, I have so darn many games installed right now....

I'm positive the steps I took above fixed it. I went through 10 rounds in the underdome (well over an hour of gameplay) without a single freeze. Previously, I couldn't play 15 minutes without at least one freeze.

I just finished about an hour as well without problem but the next time I play it might freeze after 10 mins. The same thing happens to me I can hear the game but nothing is working.
