If you're one of the tiny percentage of people who's ATI 5-series graphics card crashes the whole computer with a stripey grey effect, there's a fix coming soon. Looks like it's just a software/firmware glitch with GDDR5 state switching.

THERE HAS BEEN a lot of talk recently about ATI's 'Grey Screen of Death' and almost all of it is hysterically overblown. Let's take a look at the problem in a bit more detail.

The short story is that a number of people have reported crashes with various ATI 5-series cards where the screen goes grey or striped in appearance. Some have gone to great lengths to quantify the problem, and a few threads have proposed solutions of varying effectiveness.

The GSoD in question is only on GDDR5 equipped 58xx and 57xx cards, and only on Windows 7. The problem first started when Microsoft put out an update to Win 7, although the exact patch and what it affected is not clear. One problem is that the GSoD problem is a specific problem, but there are other issues that may mimic the same fault, and striped screen crashes have been around for ages.

Talking to OEMs, AIBs and a few ATI people over the past couple of weeks, a few patterns became evident. First is that the number of affected cards is very small. The largest forum threads have hundreds of posts, but of those, only a few hundred cards seem to be affected.

• Use ATI Catalyst 9.10 Beta.
• Update BIOS to a newer version.
• Downclock GPU Clock from CCC's Overdrive.
• Disable ATI High Definition Audio Device from the Device Manager.
• Force fan to 40% or above from CCC's Overdrive.
• Disable PowerPlay with a tweaked CCC profile.
• Boost GPU voltage with an overclocking utility.
• Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA).
• Write a nasty email to AMD's Catalyst Team.
• Give up on gaming and troll on forums and play with cats instead.

Bold suggestions worked for them. Looks like the fix will include a vGPU boost.

I'll bet a dollar they are faulty cores that passed a QA process not lengthy enough to expose their deficiencies. Deficiencies due to a crappy 40nm process tech at TSMC.

I just witnessed my first GSoD yesterday playing BFBC2 and another one last night playing (only had the beta 1 day). I was playing all of a sudden gray screen with lines, then a complete gray screen. The system locked and had to be shut down. I would think a glitch in a "beta" game caused my problem, not a gfx hardware issue. Just thought it was weird that this came up. Im not running a 5000 series card. :toast:

The amount of people on this thread that have had this makes me wonder if it's rather more than a half percent rate that see this. One person even has a 4890 and sees this.

I've never seen this with any card, BTW. Although they did crash in other ways.

I've never overclocked my GTX 285. My last ATI was a 4870 512MB and that overclocked to the max in CCC with no issues at all. :rockout:

As for SemiAccurate, they really look down on this issue, just like they kick nvidia as much as possible. If I didn't read this news on a different site yesterday I wouldn't have even believed it.

I doubt that's an accurate percentage. You forget: if a person is pleased with something, they are likely to tell a friend or two. If someone has a bad experience, they are likely to tell as many as 10 firends. The point? People on the forums (or anywhere else) tend to report more bad experiences than good ones.

Besides, if this were really that high, we would be hearing a lot more of it from tech report/review sites. I've only seen this a couple times when I was overclocking my card, and a simple voltage bump through Afterburner fixed it.

Indeed, mine only grey screens when i reached the oc limit, so the driver restarts. Although i did have it once when i was 'only' at 1GHz core for about 1/2 a second on dirt 2. That's been it. Apart from that one very brief occurrence, the card has been very reliable at 1GHz core/1300mem.

True, but it doesn't seem likely to me that a 0.5% rate would have so many in the TPU community reporting this. Just my feeling; can't give you numbers.

I used to have that GSOD alot on my sapphire hd5770. had my core to 950 and mem to 1345. These were the recommendations of the CCC overclock. But once I downclocked my mem to 1300 from 1345, all the GSOD went away. Been playing hard for 4 days and no problem.

One thing to try, revert back to Catalyst 9.11 or 9.10 and don't overclock for now. When my 1950 pro came out initially, you couldn't overclock it at all, several catalyst updates later allowed adjustments without crashes. I think most here who bitch about Catalyst being crap really need to bitch over at AMD Catalyst Feedback website in a professional manner, if you are unprofessional they will not give a fuck who you are and treat you like a Red Headed Step Child

to me the Grayscreens or Stripes you may want to call it can usually occur if the card is not getting enough power as if a brownout occurred. If possible try having Powerplay tech disabled and attempt to run the card at the higher non overclocked settings for now. Also take a look at the video cards contact spots to ensure the cooler is fully seated on the GPU and memory. Also I don't go out and buy a Brand new Card initially as QA hasn't gotten fully accustomed to the product just yet and it's in works of being improved so to speak in later "steppings" Initially the Radeon 9700 Pro AIW was a green PC, then it became a Red PCB, with a few other changes like some sinks on VRMs etc.
