I was intersting on seeing how much I can beat up my XFX XXX Blackedition 5850 card while it was running crossfire with a PowerColor (OEM) card. My result's were mixed, but I was happy with the outcome. I will explain more towards the end. I am currently working on making it more stable around 1000/1200 (it crashes half way through Heaven @ 1080p 2x AA. (The readings I was getting was ~100FPS)

So, here are my results, I will run a 3D Mark with my stock settings with my voltage @ 1.312v.

[ SYTEM SETTINGS ]

AMD 965 BE o/c 3.8 Ghz
Corsair XMS3 1333MHz @ 9-9-9-24
600 Gig HDD RAID 0 @ 7,200
Gigabyte MA785GT-UDH3
Asetek 240mm LCLC

[ Part I. ] Pre-Benchmark

To start things off, I used MSI Afterburner 1.2 and raised my Voltage to +1.3v and then used AMD GPU tool to raise my Clock @ 1,000 and my Memory @ 1,300. Everything worked fine with my FarCry 2 Benchmarks and my Crysis Warhead benchmarks, most suprisingly was my Crysis Warhead benchmark. You will see why with the pictures.

Notice how the fan temp went from ~30c (idle) to ~71c idle, huge difference.

My PowerColor stayed idle (10.2 Catalyst drive)

My XFX card o/c'd

PowerColor card stayed the same during my test's.

My XFX after a couple of min's of o/c'ing. It went down to a better temp.

[ Part II. - Benchmarking ]

My two test's I did here were FarCry2 and Crysis Warhead. In the picture you can see what settings I used so I don't really have to explain it.

FarCry2 Benchmark Tool - Everything is maxed out. I didn't do 1080p because you won't really notice it when you play video games. Plus, it saves you some FPS.

FarCry2 Benchmark during massive Battle scene

Crysis Warhead benchmark @ 900p. It did well, but the big suprise is the 1080p test I did, true the map's were different, but the Avalanche had more detail.

Very very impressed by the max/avg FPS. However, it did a heavy load on my XFX card, I didn't record it but my PowerColor was at ~75c during that test.

I don't remember if this is backwards, because if it isn't that is weird that my 1000/1300 is lower by several points. ? This is where it start's to become unstable.

[ Part III - Without Crossfire ]

Same settings, but with just the XFX running.

Same settings, however this is the Farm map, where there was no action.

In conclusion, I have found out that MSI and AMD's GPU tool is extremely easy to use and it's ease of o/c'ing is amazing. :rockout: However, it sucks that I cannot make it stable for certain Benchmark programs :banghead: :banghead:. I will update this when I do my 3D Mark 06 test soon.

ATI 5850 is a powerful card, and one to be reckon with :respect:

Dude with those voltages you should be in 60%over in the fan, ideally 80

I am running my HIS 5850 950/1300 with T-Rad2 GTX and R4 cooler @ 1.15v. Increasing volts didn't get me much better numbers, but did produce much worse temps, so I stopped there.

What's your temps you are getting? I am thinkin about buying aftermarket cooler for my xfx

Actually, with a little more tweaking I wa able to hit 965/1300 @ 1.15v. Here are the temps after 30 minutes of Furmark:

GPU 1: 69
GPU 2: 69
GPU 3: 71

VDDC 1: 65
VDDC 2: 65
VDDC 3: 75

I lapped the T-Rad2, but the big discovery was to use the R4 without the supplied TIM and just use paste on the VRMs. With TIM my temps were >100C, compared to the VRM temps above with paste.

Here is a good thread on aftermarket 5800 series cooling: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2048818
