Cisco: Lightning fast Internet Connection

Cisco made headlines today announcing a next generation router that will revolutionize the internet by increasing downloads to unheard of speeds. The Cisco press release makes the following claims about the CRS-3 router:

It enables the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress to be downloaded in just over one second; every man, woman and child in China to make a video call, simultaneously; and every motion picture ever created to be streamed in less than four minutes.

electrons in copper travel at roughtly 66 % the speed of light if i remember correctly.

It's the carrier router, as soon as they can micro down the tech for your individual modems it will be available as the ISPs start implementing it, which they will do quickly in large areas due to the very obvious boost in sales and speeds that can be offered.

It will get changed up, as long as we can get our large backbones up that in and of itself will make a massive difference, it will spread slowly but it's a start.

It is an Internet trunk router for handling many, many nodes. It isn't something you'll be seeing in a home anytime soon.

It currently costs $90,000.

I've actually installed a few of the current generation of this chassis - the 8500 range.

The cost of $90k will get you just the chassis...no power, no switching engine, no line cards.

To give you an idea of the true cost:

an OC-48 line card with 4 ports ( 4 x 2.5G ports) will cost in the region of $250,000
a single power supply will be in the region of £10k

So for one of these fully populated you will be talking about an investment of several million dollars.

The real benefit to us (the downstrem user) is much more bandwidth at the core which means in the future you will stand a much better chance of utilising all of your bandwidth.

No..... Not at least when you consider just people who "have" internet access. I think it's about 60/40 last I read.

Anyways, this will aide the major trunk lines, which is where the problems are starting to form currently, and also the most expensive to add on to, so this is epic great news.

Think about the way the internet really works here, and where the lines are really flooded the worst.
