I'll buy a 5870 soon , so I tried to find solutions to various problems encountered with this card (and the 5 series in general) just in case. the data is gathered from various forums.
"big mouse cursor" :
- ATI realesed a hotfix that resolves the problem for many, here :
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/ATICatalyst102Hotfix.aspx
- Also you have to try updating the motherboard Bios (this will work for 90% with gigabyte boards).
"Flickering in 2D and video mode" : This is related to clocks being low. Erocker did a nice job, see his post : http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=117633
"GSOD and vertical stripes" : this is maybe related to clocks and especially to voltages.
- Catalyst 9.12 Hotfix fixed this problem for a minority.
- Two official 5870 bios updates are availables and don't figure in "VGA bios collection", one from XFX (02/23/10) and the other from Diamond (01/22/10).
XFX 5870 : http://driver.xfxsupport.com/public/BIOS/587AXXX_BIOS.zip
Diamond 5870 : http://www.dmmsupport.com/index.php?action=kb&article=97
These updates have helped overcome the problem for many and should work for any reference card without problems.
The bios from diamond is an exe to update from windows using winflash, if you like to flash using msdos (that is more secure) then you can extract the exe using Winrar and take the bin file then use Atiflash.
XFX cards suffer most from these problems (Dont know why), in other hand I have not seen many Asus (MSI also) cards holders suffering from these issues and effectively the Asus bios helped to get more stable cards.
Hope this will help users with thoses problems. And sorry for my bad english
