It does seem that the gtx480 will do very well at extreme settings compared to the hd5870, but in real world scenarios (i.e. what normal gamers play at - 1680x1050 - 1980x1200) it won't be much better than a hd5870, and sometimes it even performs worse.

So it looks like if you own an uber resolution monitor, the gtx480 would be the way to go! However, the hd5970 is still the undisputed champ, as we all expected. Also, let's face it, with the price inflation with these cards, the hd5970 will be around the same price too, so i do feel the gtx480 is a fail. The gtx470 may have more of a hope, but it's likely to trade blows with the hd5850 and be left in the dust by the hd5870 (judging by it being around 10-15% slower than a gtx480).

I know fudzilla isn't the best site, but it is still interesting to read, since it seems like it could be very much true.

That may be just due to more and faster memory. In any case... 12 hours left before the first flood of reviews comes. It will be interesting. I am expecting to see the classic "the drivers are not yet mature line".

The performance at high resolutions is definitely linked to memory, since at lower resolution it's pretty much neck and neck it would seem. And of course the drivers aren't mature! it makes the buyers feel more secure about spending around $150 more on a card that's got the same performance as a cheaper one! What needs to be done is to compare the gtx480 to a 2gb hd5870, since the difference from a standard hd5870 is actually within the bounds of how much extra memory the card has as very high resolutions.

2gb 5870= 5890 :respect:

It would be interesting to see what a 2gb 5870 would do against the GTX480

Is the HD5970 only $499? I understood that $499 was going to be around the 480's price.

for sheezy...

I want a single 5870 Lightning with voltage tweak and a waterblock for that price. That $150 will get me a waterblock and a spare pump for my loop.

LOL... nice man nice... If it can beat my OC'd 260's in SLi at 1680 by 1050 by a fair margin I will be officially impressed. I get 21K GPU score in vantage P. If it can beat that, I will consider it a hot steamy pile of success.

Well I think we can all agree that if it is a success or failure, the gtx480 will be a hot steamy pile of something - good or bad

just a fun fact. The prices of the 5850's have all decreased dramatically on newegg today. The toxic was up to 380 at one point, they dropped standard price back to 330 and have it on "sale" for 320 :)

Yeah, knew it - so much for AMD saying the prices are gonna hold "firm". The shiny new one isn't even out yet and the prices have been slashed.

LOL... nice man nice... If it can beat my OC'd 260's in SLi at 1680 by 1050 by a fair margin I will be officially impressed. I get 21K GPU score in vantage P. If it can beat that, I will consider it a hot steamy pile of success.

Thanks phanbuey. I originally thought of leaving the "Well, someone has to?" bit off, but I figured that someone then wouldn't get the joke, flame me and it'd be infractions all round. Heck, maybe I should have...
