So, the great Sony (possibly fearing the PSP cat and mouse game extending to the PS3) has done what I consider to be a seriously dick move. The PS3 firmware update to be released next month will remove an advertised feature of the console for no good reason (the keyword in that sentence was "good"). Unfortunately, their BS TOA for using the PS3 entitles them to be able to remove features of their software for any arbitrary reason, but man, this seriously saddens me.
Choosing not to upgrade will be a forfeit of all usage of their PSN service, plus the forfeit of all new updates to Blu-Ray and game compatiblity (and you can be sure Sony will make future released games require the update).
