Asus P5K Firewire Problem With Windows 7

I just upgraded to Windows 7 64 Bit and now when I hook up my external hard drive to the Firewire Port on my Motherboard the read and write speeds are super slow.

I assume the standard Windows 7 installed driver for the IEEE 1394 port on my ASUS P5K (Socket 775) Motherboard needs updating, but I am not sure where to find one?

Of maybe the cause of the drop in speed is something else. Maybe I need to flash the Motherboard BIOS itself with a new one which is more compatible with Windows 7 64 Bit?

Cheers for any thoughts or advice...

are you sure its the firewire thats at fault? i've seen WD enclosures with firewire 400 and 800 that couldnt sustain 25MB/s, just because the enclosures were so crap...

Thanks for your quick response. I actually have 2 externals. One of the enclosures might be crap, but the other one is a LaCie so it shouldn't be a problem. Also, I still have my older XP install on another partition on my C Drive and when I boot up in XP the transfer speeds on both drives via Firewire are normal. So it would seem it is not related to the external drive hardware.

alright, if it works in XP and not vista/7, then yeah - its a driver/software problem.


Have you tried installing the latest drivers for the firewire controller?

Also, go into device manager and see what the performance settings are like for your drives.

check the motherboards website for drivers, and if that doesnt help find out what brand it is from there, and get the drivers from that brands website
