An "extensive update" for Counter-Strike: Source (PC) is now available to owners of the multiplayer shooter by way of a limited beta, Valve Software has announced.

"The update includes a host of new features and functionality developed in collaboration with Hidden Path Studios," explained Valve. "This beta will run for a limited time, and once complete, the update will be deployed to all Counter-Strike: Source owners for free."

Among that "host of new features and functionality" you'll find the following:

144 achievements added
New lifetime player stats and summary screens
New match player stats and summary screens
New end of round display with MVP and interesting fact about a player
Updated scoreboard with new icons, visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures
New cinematic death camera
New domination and revenge system
Added avatar icons to voice chat, scoreboard, and end of round display
Incorporated many source engine updates

New playable team: counter-counter-terrorists

Yeah, saw this on Steam the other day. Whilst Steam is most certainly DRM and subject to the same criticisms, Valve consistently make me feel more than satisfied as a customer with acts such as these. Very few other big companies shows the same degree of support for communties based around older products.

yeah its amazing how many servers are still active despite hardly anyone ever playing on them. in most cases there are as many empty servers as there are populated servers.

it doesnt matter as you as you think. I agree it does come into effect a little, but there are those with no life, no job, & no hope that stay up & game all night. it doesnt matter if your 7 or 8hrs ahead. people will still be playing but the number of active empty servers outnumber the whole of the player base IMO there are just hundreds of empty servers & most players have moved onto other games.

Hmmmm I wonder how extensive of a graphics update this will be?

Mainly wondering because a lot of the people I know who still play CS:S do so in part because they have old computers. It's still my brother's favorite game and he plays on a 2.66Ghz P4 with an AGP Radeon x1550. Sometimes I even play it on my laptop with a 1.7Ghz Pentium-M and a Mobility Radeon 9200. It would kind of suck if it no longer runs well on that sort of hardware.

Most people with newer computers have long since moved to other newer games like MW2 and BC2.

Got into beta, what few servers there were up were full.

Got into an office game, and things were definitely different.
I think they moved CS:S over to the source 2007 engine. Everyone moves slightly faster, and motion blur makes the gun animations look strange (sometimes jerky, it's really hard to explain).

Also, the achievements, from the ones I got to look at, they all look pretty boring imo.

Get x kills in one round, get x kills total, play x games, dominate x times, etc.

Didn't see anything that unique, but we'll see what happens I guess.

agreed. they play it tons at LAN events i go to, and the few who play it, absolutely own at it.

That said, we introduce a new map that no ones played on and i shit all over them... these people just spend 10 ours a day playing the same damn map over and over.
