Request to PSU manufacturers...

I know its a long winded debate about modular vs. hardwired. most people like modular but enthusiasts swear by hardwired. Many companies do a bit of both but i think they are doing it a bit differently than they should.

lets think logically for a minute....

Q: what cabling is needed 100% of the time?
A: 24pin, 8pin cpu, 6pin pcie (as a bare minimum)

Q: what isnt needed?
A: 8+ sata, 8+ molex

so it would a good idea for PSU's to come with:

Hardwired...
24pin power
pcie power
cpu power

modular...
sata
molex

Now that that is said, for enthusiasts like myself that run multi gpus and high current setups how about have a psu like this...

1XXXwatts
Hardwired:
1x 24pin
2x 8pin cpu
4x 8pin pcie
7x 6pin pcie

Modular:
2x sata strings
2x molex strings

and a feature that would make running dual psu's easier...

psu to psu link cable. (a simple 2wire cable that connects primary psu to secondary psu to allow both psu's to turn on at the same time) no more paperclip trick.

NOW... for mid range, more realistic models...

under 1000watts,
Hardwired:
1x 24pin
2x 8pin cpu
3x 8pin pcie (6+2)
3x 6pin pcie

Modular:
3x sata strings
3x molex strings

any comments? what do you think about these ideas?

I personally don't want more than two 6+8pin PCI-E hard wired since that's how many I'll need most of the time.

Temp monitoring!!! I want to know if my psu is stressing out and gonna die!!!

QUITE FANS!!!!

Stronger Rails!!!

Better cable ties(like the Energmax ones, not just standard black zip ties)

How about a tester piece so that you dont have to bend a paper clip and worry about zapping yourself.

Or maybe offer cable sleeving tools, tips, and other mods that wont void warranties.

right on... i was just leaving room for F@H machines running ~750w psu's with multiple vid cards along with people running up to 3way sli/xfire

perhaps some sort of usb monitoring? thats an added expense but i suppose its a good idea.

maybe just a built in watt meter on the back...

im a fan of PWM fans... lol @ the pun.

stronger rails sure. how about dual 90a 12v rails?

i agree with everything ... but i get my zip ties at lowes ... so i guess they are better than the free ones

That's where modularity comes in, IMO.

I personally appreciate fully modular PSUs. I have never seen a failure due to a cable being modular. Has anybody else?

Would it really cost that much for a watted display on the psu? Or maybe a small readout? For an extra $20 I'd love to have essentially a Kill-A-Watt on my PSU.

What about a little things that come with the motherboards, small little displays that read out temps and fan settings?

How much would it cost to really implement something like this? $20? $50?

you are certainly entitled to your opinion. perhaps this idea doesnt suit your liking but i still feel like it would be nice to have companies to offer enthusiast psus with similar features

the LCD readout would be pretty simple i would think.

software support would be a task

so why don't you rate a few PS's that are close to what you like

I personally think the HX850 does it perfectly.

Hardwired:
24-pin ATX
2x 6+2 Pin PCI-E

Modular:
Everything else.

well like i described above would be best for my needs.

but since you requested...

i like the Antec TPQ1200 BUT it has WAY too many cables. If they got rid of the hard wired sata and molex it would be even better.

i also like enermax revolutions/galaxy evo but it would be nice if it had more hardwired pcie while keeping the same amount of modular pcie.

most psu's come with FAR too many sata and molex connectors. i have never used more than 6 at a time even in a packed PC. i do know that many people use more than 6 but i also know that you can put more than 2-3 on a strand... and dont psu manufacturers know that most of us put our drives closer than 6inches from eachother? the distance between connectors doesnt need to be that long. the enermax comes with cables long enough and heavy duty enough to power 12 drives on a single strand safely. if you had 2 strings of 12 that would be plenty. why not send the cables long and with only 1 connector at the end then supply extra connectors for the user to add where needed?

Molex is becoming legacy i think; i have a fan controller so i don't use any 3pin to molex connectors, all my HD drives are SATA, my two opticals are Molex but that's all i use them for.

I totally thought about modularity according to the power of the power supply. A 400W only needs the 24 pin Hardwired really....

Hardwired for lower end should be enough for the mobo 1 HDD and 1 ODD. then a bit higher should add perhaps for a video card and so on...

One question I have for you is what benefits are there for Hardwired over modular?

Dude today I used a new Cooler Master 500W PSU and the 4+4 CPU and 6-pin PCI-e were on the same line. No problem right? Well they only put a 4 inch gap between the 4+4 plugs and the 6-pin plug on the end. They also put a separate 4-pin only CPU on it's own line! So you can either use the 4-pin CPU and 6-pin PCI-e but if you use the 8pin CPU you can't use the 6-pin PCI-e plug!! Well you could if you had a 6-pin extension that is.

I mean seriously WTF are you thinking Cooler Master? If you have 4+4 CPU plugs why do you even need another separate 4-pin CPU at all? Gezz the 6-pin should have been on it's own line not another 4-pin!

The Cooler Master UCP 700W is a nightmare if you dont use all the cables, it has 2x molex cables, 2x sata cables, 2x pci-e 6pin, 2x pci-e 8pin + 6 pin cable ( why dont they use an adapter from 8 pin to 6 pin instead of adding an extra cable with a 6 pin connector, that is incredible difficult to hide if its not used, the same for the EPS12V cable), 1x motherboard connector and 1x CPU connector (EPS12V and ATX12V)

This would require changes to the power spec I think. Because the PSU is only designed to output power and not data. Would require modification to the 24 pin mobo. Maybe a 25 pin mobo for data? :) it would be VERY useful. Figure it's one of the most important pieces of hardware and we can't read the temps!

NVidia has already done that. They made some standard were your PSU and other cooling equipment could talk via USB to their monitoring software. ESA it was called.

Imo, psu better be as it is now. Its main function is to power up all of component with clean and stable juice.

Other hardwares come and go, but my psu, phase change cooler and LN2 pot always the same ones:D
