What happens when your computer blows up?

Title is a little misleading

I didn't want to make it long. But I was just curious because this seems to be my worst nightmare. What if you build a PC and the power supply zaps your computer taking out a few components with it? What happens? Are you SOL? Does the PSU manufacturer pay for the cost of replacing parts? Does newegg give you a second chance?
I'm curious cuz the OCZ StealthXstream I had died within like 4 hours. Given my low power requirements if I had put it in a higher power Phenom II X6 system I don't want to know what could have happened. Just curious though.

pretty much you are SOL, manufaturers will not cover power related kills.

your are SOL.

the PSU manuf will replace the PSU most likely, but they will not replace parts killed by it.

sometimes you can send those parts away under warranty and get them replaced, so long as you dont say "hey, someone ELSES product failed, and your parts died cause of it... so can i have a new one?"

kinda gay that your OCZ PSU died so fast, but OCZ tend to be pretty good with warranty.

oh and the x6's are pretty low power

my system idles at 110W, and loads at 300W when gaming.

yeah I don't know if I want to stick with them or get an Antec. I know that all PSUs can fail, but ... between FSB and Seasonic built units? perhaps I'm just being paranoid

I just still can't believe it that it happened to me. After thinking for awhile, "I hope this doesn't happen to me...." at least it wasn't a catastrophic failure and my current desktop is still up and kicking.

well thats the bonus to decent PSU's (of which OCZ is one) - when their PSU's fail, they tend to take themselves out only.

Thats the part that worries me though. My computer rebooted after the PSU shut itself off and the LED power light was flickering. Yeeeck

perhaps it was a fuse that tripped?

thats how the PSU's work, yes. they have fuses that shut off power when they go out of spec.

Yeah but the part where it was going out of spec- at least it shut itself down. I'm assuming that because the LED was flickering when it rebooted it was still probably going out of spec? oh well. At least I know OCZ's trip protection works...

well for all we know, you had wires shorting in the case or you dropped a screw inside it, etc.

we dont know WHY it went out of spec, but we know it shut off when it did as a safety precaution.

Maybe it could have been a little bump during transit

the box had a nice dent in a corner. Oh well. Thanks for the info though! I greatly appreciate it! and hopefully the replacement unit from Newegg will work just fine! at least I know it shuts itself off now.
I can't wait to build an X6 system. I'm taking it that you like yours a lot? :toast:

i've got a few niggles, but thats just due to such a long card covering all my sata ports and a huge CPU cooler blocking some ram slots. dont try and cram so much stuff onto a mATX board and you'll be fine.

ah lol. One of the reasons why I'm getting a new system (besides getting a MUCHO better processor) is that I'm being driven almost insane with HP's microATX case and board. Everything is just so cramped. For this new setup I'm getting a standard ATX board so I won't have to say, remove a case fan to get enough room to pull out the CPU power plug from the PSU.
