Hi guys. Iv read about this everyware. The issue is that my TV does not have the proper/missing EDID values. So my GX2 displays every resolution INCLUDING native with horrible grain (VIA HDMI). Iv searched on how to fix it unfortunately Current drivers have changed to much for these "patches" to be of any use to me. So I figured Id throw up a thread here to see if you guys knew how to override / disable nvidias EDID enforcement.

I fixed this myself last night by moddifying the monitor driver to include EDID override lines using the EDID my display was giving out. I then talked to fordGT90 last night about the problem we worked together and he knocked up a nifty little program to do what I did automatically.

This program will fix incorrect EDID readings from HDTV's and HD displays which results in grainy picture when using nvidia cards with dvi/hdmi outputs.

http://downloads.solarisutilitydvd.com/Misc/EDID Override Tool.exe

After the program creates the .inf go to your device manager.

go to monitors.

right click on your display and click "update driver software"

click "Browse my computer for driver software".

find and select the modified INF.

install it. When it asks you if you would like to install it because it isnt WHQL select "install anyway"

After installation reboot your PC.

I'm trying to solve a problem with grainy DVD playback with NVIDIA (GeForce 9400 integrated in Gigabyte motherboard GA-E7AUM-DS2H). As I've been hunting for a solution for several weeks I try pretty much anything I stumble across.

So... I ran the EDID Override Tool, and I think something happened, like a command window opening and closing really fast. Is there any sort of output to the user at all?

What is the INI file called and where does it get saved? I.e. how does one browse to it?

are you using a TV or your monitor to watch the DVD? .... does the signal look normal and not grainy for everything else?

At the moment using:
- Dell LCD monitor, 2408WFP. (Will get a TV if I can get this HPTC "wife-ready".)
- NVIDIA driver 195.62 (Have tried several earlier versions also.)
- Windows XP Pro w/ latest updates.
- MediaPortal, but I've also looked at the playback quality in Windows Media Player, VLC, MPC-HC, and XBMC. All have this issue.
- Have avoided any codec packs thus far.

The monitor is connected via HDMI, and to answer your question, the signal is fine otherwise. Just DVD looks terrible. Attached is a cropped screen shot from MPC-HC using VMR9 (renderless), at 200% zoom. Settings are all default for NVIDIA and for player. (I did have to change one: unchecked VMR Mixer Mode because it made picture black and white--?) In addition to the blotches, notice the huge difference in value between the black area on the left and the pillar-box border on the left edge.

I should mention when the same monitor is connected to a new Windows 7 machine, the same DVD looks really good. That machine (Dell Inspiron 570) has integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200, and picture quality is the same with either EVR or VMR9. There is no "noise" and black areas are black -- indistinguishable from pillar-box border.

Regarding the topic of this thread, I was wondering if somehow EDID/HDMI was involved in this issue. HDMI has been in the back of my mind also because, on occasion, the monitor goes black for about 1 second, regardless of what I'm doing (video playback or surfing web), and I have no idea if it is the graphics card or the monitor causing this.

if it looks good at the desktop or something than EDID isnt the issue. its driver or settings related. if it was HDMI. then it would look grainy all the time.

Regarding my original query about EDID Override Tool, I'm still not sure how to use it; where is the output file created?

It turns out my immediate problem is not related to EDID, but I will be getting a TV soon, for which your tool may be helpful.

- Windows XP Pro w/ latest updates.

When I run it, I see the standard warning about unknown publisher, then I click OK, and I hear a blip of activity from the hard drive, but otherwise nothing happens. Looking in Windows Task Manager, nothing appears in the Applications tab.

Does it rely on any Windows services?

Hmm, I wonder if my antivirus is slapping it down. Using ESET NOD32, but it doesn't report anything.

It is a .NET Framework 2.0 project so if you install .NET Framework 3.5, you should be good to go. You can get them via Windows Update, Software Updates portion.

What operating system are you running?

Machine has XP Pro SP3 and .NET 3.5 SP1, with all the latest updates.

I tried running EDID Override Tool with Task Manager open, and nothing new shows up in either Applications or Processes tabs.

When starting the tool with Sysinternals Process Monitor engaged, several pages of EDID Override Tool entries are generated. I didn't see any obvious problem there, but I'm a beginner with Process Monitor. Altogether the EDID Tool activity lasted about 0.75 seconds, and the entries ended with some svchost lines regarding prefetch of the EDID Tool, which would seem to occur when an application closes normally.

Do any other .NET applications work on that computer? Try this one:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=111527

If it opens without crashing, .NET is fine. If not, .NET is corrupt.

Sorry for the long delay in a reply, PM me if you want a quicker response. I usually don't look in this subforum. :(

No problem on the delay -- this is more of a curiosity for me, as I do not have a TV yet.

.NET seems fine. I use various .NET apps.

Your Network Tools 2.0.2 runs fine. (That's a nice utility by the way.)
