Hi Guys,

So i got my new 470, and it games easily at 750 stock volts. HOWEVER, even though I have not noticed any problems gaming.. the card will artifact from OCCT Error Scan at any OC with stock voltage.

It literally needs 1.0v to remain stable at 720Mhz core without artifacting. It also hits 94 C all day long. Its quiet at stock voltage, with the little bump in voltage for 720Mhz core its loud as hell tho.

Do you guys thing I should return this card and try to get one that has a little more OC potential?

I notice alot of people are running high OC's like the 750mhz core without problems, but I am wondering if they just didnt error test the cards (it passes stress test fine, its the error test that shows errors) or if its just my card thats a lemon.

Anyone? Im wondering if these clocks are normal or if they are generally low for this card.

dunno about a lemon but it sounds oliek a dud of an overclocker. lemon would imply that it artifacts at stock clocks.

you certainly have a heat issue, that temp is more of a 480 temp than a 470 temp!

first check thermal compound, and retighten the screws...

Does your case, that miniantec, have enough airflow?

yeah that is what I am thinking too. Its definitely alot lower clocks than i was expecting... at least 730ish on stock volts.... :/

but I am also wondering if the clocks i see online are over-hyped. The card 'seems' stable at higher clocks it just fails artifact testing on occt.

have you run the error checking on occt with your card? what are the results?

Yeah it has a fan blowing directly on it... it takes a while to hit 94C, and this is with both stock thermal paste, and also the ceramiqe that i replaced it with. The only difference is that the ceramique takes longer to get there, but ultimately that is the temp. Even with all the sides off and fans at full blast - it creeps up to 94. I dont mind because in games it never goes above 88C its just OCCT that pushes it that high.

Yeah it passes furmark/kombustor at higher clocks. But it starts to artifact in vantage and occt GPU error scanner once it gets past 91-92C. Its really only that scanner and vantage - although GTAIV will very occasionally have a texture artifact for like 1 microsecond. Just fast enough for you to wonder if you actually saw it or not.

Appreciate the help everybody! RMA'ing is such a pain in the a** that im wondering if i should do it - and if this is the more or less norm for these cards than I really dont wanna do it for 25Mhz more on the core. Current clocks are 710, 1760mem at .987v.

Can go up to 740 1760 mem at 1.012 but it is LOUD.

Ok, looks like the card is just weak at overclocking.

As for loud, well if the card is in the 90's I bet it is loud. you could try setting a fan speed profile to keep it cooler longer, but eventually the fan is going to spool all the way under load.

Are your cards like this noise wise or is this one particularly bad?

I hit like 750/1850 on stock volts. When I was on air they were loud as hell;)

with volts I can reach 835/2000 on water or air, seems to be the top for my cores.

The case could be a heat issue, but my cards will run just over 100 degrees before the driver shuts em off. Temps are bad for you, but under spec.

Is this a reference 470?

Yep its reference. MSI fugly sticker version. Have you tried OCCT error scanner for artifacts on 750mhz?

I have beat the piss out of them with everything I could throw at them;)

I doubt your corsair is the issue, so I'm not bringing up power draw related issues. I will say this though. I took her Vanilla from my rig with 2 other cards in it, and her OCZ 700W PSU was too old to keep it powered correctly. I swapped her PSU and the card came back to normal clocks. That OCZ was 4 years old though, and it blew up weeks later;)

OCz's do tend to do that... ive had one (a 700W gameXtream or w/e) that did that too.

Ive watched the 12V rail on the Corsair and it doesnt dip during load (using gigabyte mobo monitoring so i dont know how accurate it is.)

I think ill just keep it at 710 1760 and be happy with that. It does OC, to 740 core which is more than enough but the noise is enough to where i have to take phone calls in another room lol.

well here is how I see it. The card will rape games stock, overclocking is just a bonus right now:D Look into an aftermarket cooler maybe. Water is as silent as the fans you choose. For air I havent tested much aside from the Gelid Icy Vision. No sound, good numbers, but it wont fit every 470 out there:(

My 470 only does 725/1700 with 1.037V and 775/1900 with 1.087V. I wouldn't doubt that it's because of my motherboard though. Strange things seem to happen when I have an NV card plugged in.

tightening the screws just dropped my temps by 8c lol... i also switched out the intake fan for a 38mm...

much much quieter now. Im using stock fan profile... i dont care if its at 90C as long as i cant hear it and nv says its fine. :D
