Hello guys,

After almost 2 years just reading down here I finally registered myself.
The problem is as follow.

I bought a second hand HD4870X2. The guy was so kind to bring it because we where dealing with a HD4870X2 + EK Acetal block so shipping this with that weight is not so jammy.

On arrival I asked him if I can check the card if it is working. I plugged it in and I got a image on my screen. So far so good.

Because I was building a whole rig around this card it has been laying now for almost 2 weeks. After building all this day I noticed in windows that it only recognised 1 card and the other was named "HD4800 series"...

After some closer inspection it looks like the slave core on this card has been flashed to a HD4870 (device id matches also). I thought, just download a HD4870X2 master and slave bios on your GPU database and flash it. But here came the trick. The master flashed itself without any problems, but the slave refuses to flash in any way...

What's up????

Screens:

So my big question is, can ANYBODY help me?
For the record, the first (master) core works without any problem. I can even game and so on... --->>> I tested Bad Company 2 and within the startup I got artifacts and few seconds later my whole PC hangs itself up...

Same problem here: How To Use ATIFLASH

Be careful if you are flashing with an nvidia card in the mix. I would take all of the cards out except for the X2 and just reflash it. Are you typing the correct codes? Did you try "Forcing" flash?

Try it just with the X2 card:

Code:
atiflash.exe -p -f 1 "filename.bin"

You got a point with the 8800 still in. Yeah, I used all the force functions atiflash has :p... Look at the dos looking screens in the beginning...

Hey

check teh bios of second gpu 'far from the connectors DVI' it's not present because I try this in sapphire hd4870x2, I take out the second bios , the card will show hd 4800series, the same as your problem, and in atiflash it show the same thing, you must open your card and you search the bios, it is on fan face, it seems like *25pv** or something like that. my english is not well.

I am still very confused as to why it would be flashed to 4870 in the first place, unless I am missing something.

What do you exactly mean? As far I understand what your meaning is that the bios on the second GPU is gone, and that's why it gets recognized as a HD4800 Series...
Maybe you can show (red circle or something) on this picture what you mean?

I am still very confused as to why it would be flashed to 4870 in the first place, unless I am missing something.

When I bought the card GPU0 (master) was a RV770 with device ID 9441, this is correct normally.
But the second chip (GPU1, or slave) was showed up as a "HD4800 Series" and GPU-z reported a device ID of 9440 (wich is the HD4870 normally).

So I don't exactly know if there is a HD4870 bios on GPU1, or this is just a mix of circumstances wich creates this false recognizing and stuff...

its weird it shows bios rom 2 as being 64kb not 128kb like rom 1 maybe somehow it was flashed to an older bios like when the 4800's first came out, wizz has a guide somewhere on how to change the 64kb to 128kb issue

I was thinking the same. But the big question mark is, the owner before me has almost no knowledge about PC's, let alone watercooling...
The strange thing also was, I could run Furmark perfect (only 1 core though) but when I yesterday said I could game perfect I actually tested it then and 5sec and got artifacts on a black screen. A few more seconds and the PC would hang.

In my head the reaction of alexsubri I did remove the 8800GTS and wanted to boot a few minutes ago on my HD4870X2 (to flash and verify a few things) and I instantly got artifacts all over the boot screen. Counting seconds and the PC hangs itself again. Installed the 8800GTS and booted of him (as primary card now) and when I was in my desktop, the first thing I checked was GPUz and look :eek::cry: :

What is happening!!!!!????

EDIT:

Going to remove the card from the EK block and physically check the PCB etc...

I got some bad news. Firstly when I got the card only the day I bought it I saw after he left some green reaction stuff like water on copper. I sweeped it away with a towel.

I removed the block now and looked directly on that spot and found some interesting stuff.
Check:

PS: Excuse me for the quality, it's made with only a 3.2MP camera from the Nokia 5800.

you need to clean that up ASAP.

Let it dry before running it again.

Offcourse, it is water damage. When properly dried the card can work just as normal. But even then, I don't want this :shadedshu . And yes, I think there is AS5 used for the mem pads. There are thermal pads on the mosfets though.

That's the joke, the card is second hand. I don't have the stock cooler, nor any box or invoice (he was going to send me the invoice though. Even the stock cooler if he would find it).

Picture of whole card:

Clean what up? I mean, this is dried in reaction goo and doesn't come off easy without damaging the copper contacts etc. ...

EDIT:

With a electrical toothbrush and some sandsoap:

the odds of the gpu being 100% fuctional ....
are .... bad
the card was probably water cooled

his cooling failed ( leaked or something )

and he sold you a FKED up card

i think after its cleaned nd dried it may work. but the fact he used as5 for the memory chips is dumb. its rare but as5 can make contact and screw shit up. use ceramique or MX2/3/4. i would check the blocks for leaks whe they are off the card. if you see none re install it, but dont torq the screws much just enough so it makes contact no board warpiong, and try it again. the reason gpu-z showed clocks like that when you put your 8800 in the top slot is because when you switch slots with a card you must reinstall drivers or go to computer manage update drivers and then restart

edit: here is w1zz's guide to fixing the 64kb bios flash problem

Thanks guys, I have cleaned everything up and going to use some special none conductive thermal paste. Then *try* to install the block again and then test it :) .
As you can see, installing the card on the block while it's in the case is not so simple!

You will hear from me =) .

wait why would you cut slits in the top of your 4870X2 block?? that will impact performance in a bad way, they are designed like that so the heat from the fins gets dissapated by the water but cutting slits will allow the water to pass over the fins thus taking less heat with it. im confused

Wel it didn't matter. When I try to flash the card I get the same error like in the first page. Booting from it I will be doing tomorrow. But I don't got a good view on it. The card is ***** .

Normally it was supposed to create some turbulence and this before the water passes the fins so it gets pushed down again when it nears the end off the fins. But as the block can be used in 2 ways I did it like that :) . They are only 0.2-0.5mm deep so...
