hey guys,

im thinking about getting a pair of the new corsair AX psus.

my idea was to get an ax1200 and ax850

after reading reviews on them though, they are made by 2 different OEMs and are completely different from the ground up.

even the cabling is different from what i read.

jonnyguru tested both units and the 1200 was well into 90% efficient while the 850 couldnt hit 90% at all in his testing.

the ax1200 looks to be what im after but one alone isnt enough for my machine. 2 of them would be overkill though and thats why im switching psus in the first place.

my goal is

1. matching
2. sleeve-able
3. 1200watts for gpus dedicated
4. 800+ watts for the rest of the machine dedicated
5. efficient as possible

not in any order of importance though.

any insight?

I have the HX750 and HX650, defintely made by different manufactures.

Have you looked at the new Enermax line? Don't know if they're available yet.

well i already have 2 enermax 1050s. i would like to try something new but it seems i always run into a hitch like this.

funny that the 650 and 750 would be different manufacturers.

Is fully modular necessary? If not get one AX1200 and one HX850. The HX hits 90+

Hm, well it seems dual AX1200s might be your only option if you want any kind of symmetry with those features.

my question is why are you moving away from the enermax 1050's?

EDIT: lol just saw you said overkill, but is it really overkill for 4x480's and 2xcpu's and all that goodness?

according to all the reviews I have read these PSU's are absolutely top notch in terms of power delivery (most able to reliably supply more than their rated wattage), component use, build quality, etc

not to mention you have done a slick job sleeving them.

just want to try something new.

i've always had enermax's.

heres the breakdown

PSU1
mobo
2 cpus
1 hdd
1 dvd

never more than 800watts load but consistantly close to 800watts.

PSU2
4 gtx480s
10 delta fans(high current)

load is usually around 1130watts or so hence why i want to move to a 1200 instead of 1050enermax

for cabling heres the breakdown

PSU1
24pin
2 8pin cpu power
3 6pin pcie power(for cpu1 cpu2 and additional pcie)
1 sata cable

PSU2
4 8pin pcie
4 6pin pcie
1 custom cable for fans

thats it. i keep it simple.

Looking at the review the efficiency of the AX850 doesn't seem that bad, 1-3% off the mark. Looks like it only dives when pushed past spec.

from the look and cable standpoint... do they look similar enough to you?

if i had the budget i would go for dual ax1200s but thats not an option

well then I'd say the AX1200 as PSU2 is a dead easy choice, still reasearching something good in the 800-900w range...

To me they look similar enough, aside from the obvious size difference. With both those your total efficiency will be improved, even the 850 is a tad better than the enermax. I'd say just go for it, unless someone can pull an as yet unknown midrange corsair flextronic out of their ass.

is two power supplies a necessity or could one big one work for you?

actually i've heard they are filling the gap between 850 and 1200 with 2 more flextronics units.

hopefully soon
