ATI 3D Support: When will be available?

nVidia's 3D vision is becoming more and more important when buying VGAs. There were some news that ATI was bringing 3D support with 10.3 drivers but no action so far...

The technology is too expensive at the minute and those wanting to watch Avatar 200 times probably represent a small segment of the market: as others have suggested, ATI will hop on board when 3d becomes relevant i.e. mainstream.

Actually if you install the iz3d driver you can get basic 3d - as in the oldsckool red & cyan glasses, for just a few $:

Some manufacturers have been using 3rd party programs to do so, for example acer uses tridef in some of their notebooks.

I don't think 3d is something so mainstream that people wants it so badly. Even that, there are alternatives.

I too am waiting anxiously for 3D that is affordable and high quality! I don't want to be subjected to wearing glasses to have 3D. I wear glasses already and well wearing two is just stupidly uncomfortable.

I agree with you guys. I just don't want nVidia to "conquer" the market if a lot of people buy 3d just for Crysis..but until then, ATI sure will have a better suppor for it...

3D is niche, it's a fad that is currently dying fast. But I do agree ATI should do something with 3D and compete with NVIDIA.

I like 3D, but I'm not so hot on it. My main, personal reason is because I can't see it so well: my left eye is a little weak, which tends to make a 3D image go crosseyed for me (I'm ok viewing real-life 3D around me). If it's a static image, I may not be able to recover from it. If it's a game, I have to wait for it to start animating before I can lock onto it properly and even then I can got crosseyed from time to time.

Finally, I think we all know its major downfall. It has two, really:

- Those damned glasses. Regardless whether active or not or price - you have to wear them and it's too big a downer to make it mainstream. They're uncomfortable, can be expensive and shit, you have to clean them all the time :shadedshu

- You don't need 3D like you do colour or high def. As an nvidia 3D Vision owner, I can tell you that once the "wow" has warn off, you find yourself often preferring a 2D picture, because there's no parallax error and it's just more comfortable to view (and that's not just because of my eye). Heck, it doesn't even help to shoot more accurately in games, or trust me, nvidia would have been shouting about this one from the rooftops

The only benefit 3D has given the industry is competition. By trying to make the best 3D HDTV they've also made 2D looks much better. Personally I don't want to wear 3D glasses, give me a large High Def 3D set that is glasses free and looks awesome then we'll talk until then, 3D HDTV's are a waist of time and money IMO.

Ati does offer 3d through 3rd party support like iz3d and ddd 3d

They have chosen not to waste precious resources on a niche technology and instead go for an open easily accessible solution...

Ati as well as the open phsyics iniative are working on open3D initiative.

So expect 3D drivers made by ATI soon-ish or at the least, drivers built into the games them selves.

Give me a holodeck and i'll give more than half a damn about 3d.

Until then, to get even half a damn they need the autostereoscopic screens in the market, at which point it's a quick driver buff for compatibility and the "job's 'a good 'un".

I can see why people like the whole glasses thing, it's like everything else; their neighbours don't have it. Not to be a downer on everything, but there has not yet been a film or game where the drop in quality/performance has been worth it...yet. Maybe crysis 2 will do it well, but crytek have been hinting at not needing a special screen or setup for 3d anyway (60hz screen + standard cinema glasses = working 3d).

Just think about it, the 360 has 3d crysis 2, who makes the xbox gpu?

AMD cards can run 3d, as crysis 2 shows, it's just they've not been too interested in marketing it. Although the hd6 series will likely have some form of 'advertised 3d' that everyone else with a dx10/11 card will receive via driver updates.
