Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
Motherboard Manufacturer: Dell Inc Model: 0R849J Chipset Vendor: Intel Chipset Model: x58
Cooling Fans
Memory 4x1gb Elpida DDR3
Video Card(s) ATI Radeon HD 4850 512m
Storage Seagate 500g ST3500418AS
Display(s) Dell E248WFP 1920x1200
Audio Device(s) Onboard
Software Win 7
So i'm running:
BIOSTAR 9400GT 1024MB DDR-2 DX10.0 GRAPHICS CARD CSVN9402THG1

and I'm getting some lag in the video play. My video pauses, sound continues for a few seconds then pauses too, then 5 seconds later it does like a "fast forward" effect and catches up to where it is in the movie/show.

running HDMI onboard out. with the wire plugged in from video card to mobo.

I'm interested in getting:
ASUS ENGT240/DI/512MD5/A GeForce GT 240 512MB 128-bit GDDR5

looks like an upgrade but it isn't 1gb so i'm not sure.

running XBMC Live on nvidia format.

Your post doesn't match your system specs. Can you post the rest of the specs here? Might not be the GPU causing this.

yes, about that....

I'll see what I can do. It's a server a friend built for me and well, he is the type that would rather do it himself then explain things to me. so I have no idea, and it is all in linux, and to make it worse it boots directly into xbmc live off a 8g patriot usb card.

Hmm...I would post something in the Linux forum as well. I have a feeling playing stuff off a flash drive OS might be the problem. USB 2.0 is only about 25MB/s at best. I have no idea about Linux or anything, though.
