Hey guys

My server is running out of space and I'm not sure how to proceed.

I've thought of a few ideas.

Get an 8 port raid card ($250) and acquire 8 (yes 8) 2tb hard drives for a total of 14tb (a 2tb would be backup for raid 5)

I thought about getting 4 tbs and another 4 port raid card ($120 for this card) and that would give me 6tb. Currently I have 4.5 tb and have about 300gb left.

I want to build another server eventually for when I move out of my parents house, they can keep one and I keep the other. So I don't really plan to sell the drivers/raid card but use them at a later time unless hard drivers become massive and cheap.

What do you suggest I do? I thought if I go with 2tb, i'll buy one every 2 weeks for a few months.

wow you use a lot of space. I thought my 3tb server was large ;)
if you'll be building another within a year or so - i would make this upgrade as cheap as possible. the 4 port card and a drive every few weeks as you need it. they only take a day or two to get in.
just because - will your parents ever use 14tb?will they need an 8 port card (or were you going to swap it ?)

out of curiosity - what is it you do that needs RAID and that much space?

I wanted to eventually use this as an active directory server and have all my computers login to it. I run a database that is around 5gb on the server that has 3 computers connecting to it to stream blu ray rips (full 40gb rips)
It has about 25-30 years of photos, 5 people's music collection over 10 years and various game and software ISO's. Basically my entire families life is on this server. If it goes down, i'm screwed in every hole I have.

I know raid 5 isn't the best, but it is a lot better solution than raid 0, and raid 1 uses to many drives for my liking.

I don't mind spending the $1000 for drives and a controller but I hate spending the money when something cheaper and better comes up.

The new server would consist of a i5/i7 with 4/6gb of ram in it so nothing special but definitely quad. I would run server 2k8 r2 on it as well, but my dad suggest making another and clustering them, but when a license of server o8 is around 1k, I said no haha

would be a nice setup with the 8 x 2tb solution buddy, but i don't really trust those high capacity drives.. failure rates are high but i guess with the RAID-5 you have some protection. The server 2008 R2 would be a good choice for that since you wanted to use active directory. I think the newest version would allow video acceleration through the remote desktop (^___^)-b

make sure you have enough connections from the psu and plenty of cooling sucker will be hot.

I personally would wait just another month or two as WD is release 3TB drives in their externals. I expect 3TB bare drives to be on the market for Christmas season.

I also really like Drobo. It is a bit pricey, but it is very easy to manage and user friendly.

Drobo

Alright here is what I think I'm going to go with.

2 x 1.5tb's in raid 0. This will be music, photos, programs and financial information. This way if a drive fails then it will still be safe (theorectally)

4 x 2tb's in raid 5, this will be for the movie. Since this isn't mission critical. so if it went down, not a huge deal since I have 80% of the movies on a disc anyway. Thoughts?

Sounds like a plan.
