There's a lot of older games that have messed up colors on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Others have finally found a solution that almost always works: stop explorer.exe. That is basically what this application does (stops explorer, runs game, when game closes, restart explorer).
Games currently known to benefit from KillStart:
-StarCraft
-Populous: The Beginning
Usage - KillStart itself is transparent. Shortcuts point to KillStart then KillStart runs the game. To simplify the shortcut creation process, it is highly recommended to use the "KillStart Shortcut Creation Tool." If you used the installer, it can be found in Start -> Programs -> KillStart.
Path to KillStart: Required. This should point to KillStart.exe. If the Tool and KillStart are in the same directory, it will auto-fill this.
Path to Application: Required. This needs to point at the game/application that is having troubles with colors.
Application Arguments: Optional. These are parameters that you want to pass on to the game/application. These would appear on the normal shortcut you use to run the game.
Shortcut Description: Optional. This will appear in the description field of the created shortcut.
Shortcut Icon: Optional. Point to a *.ico file to associate with the shortcut. You can change this after the shortcut is created.
Save Shortcut... Clicking on this button will prompt you where you want to save the new shortcut. Use this created shortcut to run the game from now on.
KillStart Shortcut Creation Tool is not required if you know your way around shortcuts. The shortcut "Target" must point at KillStart and the first argument must be the path to the game executable. All arguments after that will be sent to the game. "Start in" should point to the directory KillStart is in.
Note: Sometimes little green dots flash on the screen randomly even with KillStart. Alt+tabbing and going back into the game appears to effect them. Sometimes it will make more appear and sometimes it will completely remove them. Keep alt+tabbing until they are acceptable. You shouldn't have to alt+tab more than three times.
Do not close the KillStart console window when it appears. It will close by itself once the game is closed. This must remain open in order to restore normal function to Windows.
Requires .NET Framework 4.0 [Client Profile] to run. The installers will prompt you to install this if you need it.
The files included in both installers are identical (the application is platform neutral).
