alright so i got a shiny new p6x58-d and an i7 950 along with 6gb of G-skill ddr3 ram....

unfortunately bios and windows 64 bit only displayed it as 4gb...

thinking it was a memory issue i bought another 6gb g skill kit and put that in...

same result.

So, kinda irritated i put in both sets and I got a grand total of 8gb instead of 12...

i've updated my mobo bios...attempted reseating the heatsink (heard that helps lol) and have run memtest+ on all the ram.. (i also reinstalled windows just in case)

nothing seems to help....

anything I can do short of RMA? I really don't want to take my rig apart :banghead::banghead:

cheers :)

Do you have the latest bios, because, as of bios versions 0303 and 0405 ASUS posted this in the downloads section:

Version 0405
Description P6X58D-E 0405 BIOS
1. Improve memory compatibility
2. Improve system stability
3. Support new CPUs.

Also, you might what to check these threads out:

This thread is a basic troubleshooting guide for users who have memory detection issues.
Asus X58 + 6/12GB memory overclocking - detecting less memory than installed

Hope you get it worked out.:)

Edit: Reading through the reviews over at Newegg, seems there are few people have this oddity.

wait wait by reseating the CPU do you mean like completely taking out the waterblock, lifting the CPU off the mobo and putting it back on? Haha i have a lose backplate and i'm afraid that it'll fall out when i unscrew my h70 D:

thanks for all the replies though ::toast:

You are welcome for the replies.
Did you solve your problem?

If not, the ASUS support forum link I posted for you states, as one of the first items:

Quoted:
"Poorly fitted CPU cooler ( too much tension, not enough tension, uneven tension)"

"Fix: Adjust tension of aftermarket cooler, Test with stock cooler, reseat CPU and cooler."

"*Most people fix the problem just by reseating the cpu and cooler* (Take the board out of the case to reseat the CPU/Cooler)"

As, others have mentioned and recommended this, also.

Troubles usually don't fix themselves, you have to do the work or get someone else to do it for you.
Not preaching, just stating what it could be and possible fixes.

And, just wondering; if you are not going to try... why ask?

95Viper-I just tried loosening the heatsink but nothing appears to have changed. I then tested the sticks one at a time...they all worked....then I began "stacking" them. DIMM's 3 and 4 appeared "dead" (I can take out RAM from those two slots and I will still get 8gb showing up in bios)

I think that means I'll have to RMA my mobo D:

thanks for all the help though. You guys are awesome! :respect:

i didn't read the entire thread, but for the original post, could there be an option in BIOS that is limiting RAM to 4GB? i cannot remember what it is called, but it was there in my old P965 board.

ahhh yes i remember this setting. I believe its called memory hole remapping. or in some bios's memory mapping. make sure thats disabled or enabled whichever its on try the opposite.

ah yeah, it was called "Enable Memory Remap Feature" or something. You have to ENABLE remapping, to make Windows see more than 4GB RAM. (even the x64)
