Somewhere, maybe here on tpu, I saw pictures of burnt up socket pins.

now this is interesting...

"It was the result of a series of stress tests conducted on the chipset. It didn't show up under normal testing," Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy told Reuters. "The problem wouldn't happen immediately but after two to four years."

i wonder how hard they pushed it to make that determination. and i wonder if that means some of the extreme overclockers will have theirs fried in little while.

also, i do not recommend buying one of these chips used now unless you get the warranty :laugh:

Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories. Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue. The Sandy Bridge microprocessor is unaffected and no other products are affected by this issue.

The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality. For computer makers and other Intel customers that have bought potentially affected chipsets or systems, Intel will work with its OEM partners to accept the return of the affected chipsets, and plans to support modifications or replacements needed on motherboards or systems. The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th and the company believes that relatively few consumers are impacted by this issue.

Intel cut its revenue forecast by 300million because of this. They are still projecting about 11.4 billion dollar in revenue. Its not a big hit for them, maybe just tarnishes their armor.

Interesting how Intel's stocks dropped today, and AMD's have risen a fair bit.

Unless I'm missing something, Intel claims a degradation in the SATA bus (probably causing slower IO speeds eventually). Not something that would seem to be the cause of burnt sockets/pins.

Could eventually result in data corruption, and as design flaws go that effect the transmission of data and the nominal standards I wouldn't be surprised if errors show up for users much sooner.

I'm really hoping they work out something with major vendors to make motherboard replacements easy. It's already going to be enough of a pain in the ass tearing down the system to send it in. I suppose that's the curse for us early adopters.

On the plus side, maybe we'll get a upgrade on the replacement board. Not sure how it's going to go just yet with all the articles stating "in most cases", some could luck out and be just fine in 4 years, and how many ppl keep the same main parts that long? I usually get a new board every year if nothing else so either way I'm good
