1xsata2 10k

2xsata 10k raid

2xide

2xscsi raid

all i want is the fastest setup, but im not sure if a sat2 drive would outperform a stata raid setup and i dont know is scsi is as good as sata raid these days

I'd say 2x Sata in RAID but I don't know how SATA performance compared to that of SCSI anymore. Definately RAID though.

i think scsi is still faster and the drives are made to last for like ever if i had the choice it would be those just make sure you do scsi ultra 320 or you loose the xtra speed

2x sata 300mbps 10k rpm would be best. or even dual perp 7200's for more storage.

SATA is in fact a revamp of SCSI.

SATA is in fact a revamp of SCSI.

Not completely, it did "borrow" some SCSI intelligence like NCQ. Still the SCSI mechanics are different from a normal SATA disk.

However, SCSI is outdated, get SAS

As for realistic financial ideas, the dual SATA drives would probably be the best solution. Unless you can afford those SCSI disks+controller, those will, however, be a lot more expensive.
Personally I don't trust RAID 0 arrays, had bad experiences with them. So a single 10K (SCSI or raptor)or even 15K scsi disk will most likely be the most reliable performance solution.

You know what I just realized by reading the wikipedia that SATA is still an IDE drive. Oh well...

Good call ! Reading on the subject ATM. But I have always tought that SATA was the low cost version of ageing SCSI standard. SATA is serial after all.

no sata was a version 2.0 persay to ata/pata drives. consumers were calling for faster speeds like scsi but crosstalk and interfearence limited pata to 133mb/s so they switched to serial to drop pin counts and increase speed. as i said before 2x sata 300 10k or perpendicular drives would be fastest but i would just run 2 perp drives independantly.

well sata is an "alternative" to SCSI if you will. it's an "upgrade" to ata/pata like kenny said :)

anyway, i'd go with the single 10k sata - i have one and it's nice. you won't see a ton of benefits from a RAID 0 of these, since most programs are more limited by the latency of drives than the speed - benchmarks will show nice gains, but things like game loading times will be less affected.

also raid 0 increases your chances of data loss due to mechanical failure.

Just to comment about your last point: you're right that RAID 0 is bad from that point of view that if one drive fails you have essentially lost all your data, but I'd still chose RAID 0 and make backups over RAID 1 because the majority of things that will go wrong (eg viruses, windows self destructing) would mean that both drives in a RAID 0 array would suffer the problem. But I guess RAID 0 still has that increased risk over 1 drive.
