See my subject-line/title above!

(Basically, just offer your comments as to which one is the better/best performer vs. the other)

NVidia GeForce 7800GS

vs.

ATI Radeon x800

(Again, he is AGP bus "limited" (vs. PCI-Express), & he has come down to these 2 boards as his choices, but he cannot decide easily, so I thought I might get some opinions here first!)

:)

* Costs DO matter, but only if they're $100's of U.S. Dollars apart...

P.S.=> As far as ATI offerings, * I THINK * that is the one he quoted he was looking @, but I am NOT 100% sure if that IS, AGP slot, or not... apk

the 7800GS will outperform the x800 imo. :)

And what if the x800 unlocks?

7800GS all the way.

Oh ok then 7800 it is ;)

the 7800 is tons better, but it's a lot more, isn't it? like twice as much?

You can get the X850 XT PE for AGP too. It is usually put up against the 7800 GS, not the X800.

If u DO unlock the pipelines, then it becomes the same card. The X800's stock memory is very low, but it can overclock to the same freaquency as the 7800 GS, so thats not a problem.

You can however get the 7800 GS+ from Gainward, wich has all of it's pipelines unlocked, and even though very expensive, its the best solution for AGP. Not to mention it has Shader Model 3.0, wich means u can have HDR, not with AA but still.. So for AGP its the 7800 GS.

But I was too in ur very state, trying to figure out wich card to get. However i realised that AGP was a scam now a days, cause u paying for a 7900 GTX and getting a 7900 GS in return. So i decided to buy a new PCI-E motherboard and get the 7900 GT wich i could then overclock to the 7900 GTX's clock speed. But if u do buy a PCI-E motherboard, get the X1900XT (256mb)

you could just o/c the X800gto to 850 speeds, it is possible and it will run stable

7800GS, but if cost IS a problem, there's an X850 Pro ViVo that will most likely unlock, since it's ViVo.

You'd still be running on 12 pipelines though, so even at the same clockspeeds, it wouldn't have the same performance ;)

Well, thanks for your opions/thoughts, etc. (I sent my pal Mike this URL as a link in email for him to look over as an aid to his decision making).

Thanks!

P.S.=> It was strange he was considering ATI, but then, I did an "ATI run" myself (wasn't bad @ all)... he was solely NVidia before (not a bad choice in & of itself, & he has a Ti4200 currently).

I told him the 7800 GS was the BEST ONE OUT THERE, afaik, for AGP...

However/admiittedly, I am not "that into it" really in the way of the ATI product line AGP offerings either!

(As there may be a faster one than the x800, & it WAS what he wanted to compare the Nvidia 7800GS to, but I am not aware of a faster gaming performer than the 7800GS, a better/faster videcard from ATI in the AGP slot-form)... apk

actually my 800gto is running at 16 pipelines:D

i have a x850pro modded to a x850xt....16pipes and clocks at 548/620 or so....and if it were my choice i would go with the 7800.....this (now server used) ati card is nice but a 6800gt beat it up good on the same rig....the only thing the ati did better was render dx9 with 10 more fps......but in dx7 the nvidia outted the ati by 30++ fps....i wouldnt see why a 7800gs would be worse then the 6800gt
