Does he have "anything" left? PSU perhaps? $550 might get him a CPU amnd RAM. At least anything that would be decent at OCing. :twitch:

Wow. That I wanna see. I'll be horrified if anyone did that to all the stuff I have spread acroos my place.

Anyhow, I'd go for a s939-system, I think. Dual-core perhaps, 1GB RAM, 7600GT and a decent PSU.. Mobo isn't that important unless he overclocks it. I assume the case is whole?

ok i can do this with ease

head to newegg

grab a biostar tforce AM2 board 76bucks board only, 162 with hdd combo)
2gb ddr2 533 kit(169bucks or less)
board has decent built in video, so he can hold off on a video card
now grab him a sempron64 with 256k cache, any will do for this system.
grab a fortron or epower psu thats 20+4 pin psu connector and 400-550 watts(these are in the 40$ range)
then grab a cheap case, and samsung or benq dvd burner.

that should be i his budget i would hope..

try this

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813138027
(combo it with the hdd)

comes in around 509 befor shiping.

seem image for part names and prices :)

thats a good rig for the price, hell its better then most ppl i know got other then video(video is ok, just not true gamr class, but can be upgraded easly)

boards a hell of an overclocker see
http://www.rebelshavenforum.com/sisubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=53
for details :)

all in all this should give you best bang for the buck specly with overclocking and logevity.

yes you want 2gb ram specly with 128-256 of it being used for the video card.

i think my list is better if hes got nothing left, cheap and expandable in the next 3-5 years, as 939 is dead, and ddr1 is price rocketing now that its dead.

2gb ram, 3600+ sempy64(256k 2gz stock), 320gb hdd, tforce6100 board(overclockers dream), cheapo case, epower psu(high quility same company that makes vantech and some other top names, the OEM ToPower :)

all in all its a well rounded system for the price, and later he can add an x1950pro of x1900xt for gaming :D

Or he could get a nice cheap laptop and just wait to build a monster of a desktop....
Or he could ask for stuff for Xmas or whatever he celebrates.

he could ask for a video card at christmas and wait till nid next year and get the dual core version of k8l also since this rigs fully overclockable and sempy64's are known to clock very very very well , and the only real weakness in this is the onboard video(its what u get in this price range) and thats easly replaceable with a pci-e card.

Myn would run as fast as a X1800XT so HAHA, 2 X1600 in crossfire run as fast as a X1900XT.

Plus I have more cache and more room for overclock on the CPU!

I'm thinking his rom serviced along with the Case.

The drivers arent even close to being that good yet.....Maybe and only maybe if you got 100 percent performance increase from the second card.

I'd like to find a good review over this, with newer drivers.

I've seen them for the X1600

The second card in a crossfire setup with new drivers might give a 60 percent performance increase tops.
I have seen most only give 40-50 percent though.
They are still working out the kinks in the drivers.

Ironically, Nvidia's give a slight boost over ATI's.

Myn would run as fast as a X1800XT so HAHA, 2 X1600 in crossfire run as fast as a X1900XT.

Plus I have more cache and more room for overclock on the CPU!

I'm thinking his rom serviced along with the Case.

i will call bullshit to this, x1600xt crossfire wont give that kinda perf, i have seen it myself on the 3200 chipset with a dual core opti and its no where close to my x1900xt hell my x800xt pe agp card is faster in most tests and its over 2 years old.

your system lacks ram, and ddr1 prices are raising fast, 939 has no future in a year he will be stuck with paying WAY WAY WAY to get more ram and a cpu upgrade(as things get harder to find prices go up, its called supply and demand)

corse maby you where talking at low res's like 800x600 or 1024x768......but then your cpu limited more then gpu.

Serious Sam 2
Serious Sam 2

Ok, let's get Serious! This game offers HDR, tons of impressive scenery and enough enemies to make your trigger finger tired. We've provided results below with HDR and no AA, and results with standard Anti-Aliasing without HDR. HDR is the next big thing for games coming out today and on the horizon. Although the ATI X1000 series support the use of Anti-Aliasing with HDR enabled in Serious Sam 2, the Nvidia 7000 series does not. No HDR+AA results were included in the review for this reason.

In Serious Sam 2 the CrossFire system performs just as well in most of the tests as the single X1800 GTO and 7600 GT and in a couple of tests actually comes within striking distance of the 7900 GT. As the resolution scales up the CrossFire system is able to put a good lead on the 7600 GT.

The benefit of adding a second X1600 Pro in Serious Sam 2 is very near double the speed of a single card and that is extremely impressive.

F.E.A.R
F.E.A.R

First Encounter Assault Recon or F.E.A.R. Anyone who has played this game knows that it brings any computer to it's knees. Fantastic visuals, this is one of the most advanced graphic engines we have seen. If you haven't played this game you should really check it out. Both graphics and machine settings were on "Maximum" in the F.E.A.R. performance menu. Soft Shadows were turned OFF.

It's pretty obvious that FEAR is not a game that X1600 Pro CrossFire is working correctly on.

X3
X3: Reunion

This new game is starting to get a lot of attention and rightfully so. It offers some of the best visuals that we've ever seen in a PC game. Visit the gang at Egosoft and download the demo. We tested with the resolution set to 1280x1024, High Quality with 4xAA/16xAF and everything enabled.

COD2
Call of Duty 2

Call of Duty 2 was tested with a custom multi-player demo. Quality Settings were set to max, DX9 rendering, and Anisotropic filtering. Optimize for SLI was enabled for all cards.

Our CrossFire system is running just as well as the 7600 GT in this test with AA enabled. At 1600x1200 the X1600's show that they still have some fight in them with AA disabled, performing like an X1800XL. CrossFire again shows just how powerful it can be over a single card by nearly doubling the performance of the single X1600 Pro.

not looking good for x1600 crossfire :O

lets try a NEW review of the x1300xt and 1650pro and 1900gt

humm close to a GT but nothing like an x1900xt or x1800xt :O

but wow how the story changes with fear

not even close at low res let alone high res...... note that the min on the cf rig is 9/0fps, x1900gt is 27 this is at 1600x1200.

lets see high quility

cf still beeten by x1900gt, how is that possable, you said it was as fast as a x1900xt :O

i think thats enough proof your full of it :)

hes better off with my reccomended rig then getting an x1950pro or x19x0xt card when he saves some $ as it will give better perf, longer AND cheaper upgrade path(am2 has years of chips to come 939 is DEAD, ddr1 is dead and prices are rocketing, ddr2 has years more life in it and prices are DROPPING)

but hey that wasnt the point of this little post, it was to point out that x1300xt or x1650pro(x1600xt) crossfire is not the same/as good as x1900xt , hell a x1900gt or x1950pro are gonna be faster in reality, and wont takeup 2 slots to do it :)
