i bought a sapphire X800np 256Mb.

it has totally same spec. and PCB with X800XL.

Only difference with XL is, X800 has 4 less pipes than XL.

I tried to find a difference between XL and NP cores, but nothing came out.

The resistor locations were same, and wasnt able to find any laser-cut.

I was hoping that BIOS method might work, but looks like it aint gonna work either.

VGA Adapter information changed to X800XL, but still 12 pipes.

Does anyone have a wisdom to solve this case?

PS. ATi is getting smarter every time. (hope we are smarter )
PS2. my card can be overclocked to 445/520. thanks to 2ns DDR3 memory.

Well for starters x800 PCIe cards use R423 cores and x800XL's use R430 cores. What does it
say on your core. If it's an R430 then flash it with the BbATI 113-A47452-101 x800XL bios
dated 11/24/04 using the W1zzard modified version of Flashrom 2.37. That should get you
16 pipes. If it doesn't there is probably one or more SMR's that needs to be moved in one or
more of the programming resistor switch banks.

There is very little info on either card (I do have a x800xl here now to work on).

The original x800 PCIe's used R423 cores. The x800XL's use R430 cores. Now it could very
well be the x800 non XL PCIe cards are using R430 cores now. It makes little sense and increases
the builders cost to build x800 non XL's with a different core and PCB now that the x800XL's are
out. That is why I said to look at the core.

It is the same with the old 9800Pro 256 cards. You can still get them new but instead of getting
the original R350 core 16 chip cards you will get a 9800XT with a different bios, labels and package.

It simply reduces the makers part inventory and associated costs with they can use parts from a
newer model to create an older one in name only.

ATI did learn from the old 9500's that could be turned into 9700's that is darn sure!!!

W1zzard I uploaded some x850 bios to you but haven't seen them up yet. Did you get them? I
have a BbATI x800XL bios to upload to you as well.

It should say R423 right on it (I think). The R430's are clearly marked as R430 in the laser
etching on the core surface. Also does the core have the bridges like the R420??

no bridge.
Heard that some even had X800XT marking on it .
I also had PRO and XTPE, but it had X800pro and XT marked on it instead of R420.
Even 9550 had 9550 marked on it. not RV350 or 360.
Ati is marking VGA names instead of core numbers.

Here is a shot of the R430 core on the BbATI x800XL I have at the moment. It just a quick
available light shot but you can see the markings.

yea. First few cards had core "NUMBER" on it, but after that,

they started to mark names on 'em. I was able to see few XL's and non-XL's cores

but non of em had R430 or 423 on em.
(Instead, it was written "X800PRO". Guess it's R423;)

Blah. Anyways, hope somebody succeeds.

If the core doesn't have the R430 markings above it is almost assuredly NOT an R430
core. If ATI holds the core marking to the last convention the 215R line would tell the
tale with the "BB" after the "215R" indicating an R430 16 pipe core.

With the R420 core's a 12 Pipe core that can not be made to run 16 pipes would have
an "AA" there. R420 16 pipe / 12 to 16 pipe convertables have an "AD" there.

The picture below is an R420 8 pipe core for an x800se card. It has an "AB" there.

What does the 215R line read on you card core???

Only the x800XL should have an R430 but who knows what some of the card builders
may use. Once the SE cards are thrown into the mix it may become a VERY confused
situation (like it isn't already lol).

Update...Looks like the x800Pro PCIe card is using a 12 pipe version of the R430 core.

do you really think they will make X800 SE? ... & how it will look like? with 8 pipes? ... than it's the same $#!% as x700, or even worst, like x600  ... but i don't think that there will be x800 se, 'cos they have x700 pro, so it's more likely (the way i see it), that they make x700 XT (2 bad 'cos there are not 256-bits; even worst -> you can get x700 with 64-bits!!!)
->->-> from www.ati.com: RADEON X700 Technology Specifications
4 or 8 parallel pixel pipelines
Six programmable vertex shader pipelines
120 million transistors on 0.11 micron fabrication process
64-bit or 128-bit memory interface supporting 64MB, 128MB, or 256MB DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3 memory configurations

Well they are building x800se 8 pipe AGP card so who knows they may pop an SE PCIe. ATI doesn't
produce any SE cards nor do they have a reference design for them. They are typically BbSapphire,
usually for the Asia market, then manage to migrate east to the states to roost.

oky, 8 pipes ... but what about the bits? do you think that this time they will do it with 256 bits, or will go back to 128.
well, still don't know why would they to a card like that; when 9800 models came out & the prices were ~600$, so they made SE model for ~350$ ... but now we already have XL model that is for that price.
& ofcourse, x800 XL is REALLY a good one; than we have x800 with 12 pipes, that's like for another 75$ cheaper.

wow, just saw on one UK web shop, that they are selling:
Sapphire Radeon X800SE 256MB GDDR3 AGP,ATI X800SE,DVI-I,TV-Out
Price: £204.00

& yea, they have:
PowerColor Radeon X800 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E, 2xDVI/ViVo
Price: £199.00

Sapphire Radeon X800 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E, Tv-Out, DVI-I
Price: £175.00

... so if X800SE really has only 8 pipes (on this page was nothing written about that ), it's STUPID 2 but it!

correct, I know of some who tried to flash/mod them for more pipes, but it seems ATI got some new anti-mod stuff.

I guess when the X800np@XL mod will be determined, people with X800SE's will be able to unlock more pipes with the same procedure.
