ATI Tool and X1950Pro

here are my system specs.
core 2 duo e6400 @ 3.4
asus p5b deluxe
crucial ballistix ddr2 1000 (2x1gb)
HIS x1950pro (256mb)

i opened up ati tool and set the fan override to 100% (i like my stuff to run cool) and when i closed it i could tell it dropped back down, i opened it and it went back up. so i set ati tool to startup with windows and to load the default profile so that it would run 100% while the computer was running.

i then decided i would use the find max core option to overclock it, and it popped up something about the memory being overclocked, and it wasnt cause everything was at default settings. i hit ok and the entire screen turned green, i freaked out (noobish i know) and shut the comp off with the power button. when i turned it back on the mouse was all messed up at the login screen. i would move the mouse a mm and it would move 3 inches on screen. so finally after i got it to the profile and entered my password, the desktop loaded, my icons came up, seen the window for the anti-virus, and then the entire screen went black. i left it running just incase its trying to overclock it and am hoping that it will finish and the desktop will come back up.

it did this about a half hour - 45 minutes ago, i asked on overclock.net and was told to come here and ask.

Latest stable version is: 0.26 (released Dec 08 2006).

Changes in this version:
Full support for all ATI and NVIDIA cards. Only X1950 Pro overclocking is not supported.
To overclock ATI X1k cards, you do not need to disable the services in Windows
Fan settings can be saved to a profile
New logo added
Memory timings can be saved to a profile
Number of active vertex shaders/stream processors on NVIDIA added
Log file default maximum size is 2.5 MB
BIOS dump works on X1000 Series
Thermal monitoring defaults to on
Voltage control for several X1800 and X1900 cards
Control over Adaptive Anti-Aliasing
New settings tab "Driver Tweaks"
Current Draw monitoring for several ATI cards

I have also had problems with ATI Tool and my x1950 pro. Give them some time I'm sure the'll work the bugs out. In the mean time I suggest http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/283 and edit the fans defaults. Carefull though. Know what you are doing and use at your own risk.

Boot in safemode and disable ati tool. Maybe remove the ati driver from the control panel as well, reboot, then uninstall the driver from add/remove programs, then reboot, cancel if hardware detection comes up, reinstall 6.12 driver from ati's website.

lol didnt think of that :p

Possible a PCI boot up card or spare gfx card lying around?

(This is if safemode doesnt work....safemode is probably your best bet)

no i dont, and i dont have any other pci-e cards. and no agp slots. how do i get to the advanced boot options menu or whatever its called, with this board. with my other comp and every computer ive worked on its been F8, i was pressing it during bootup and it just asked me which device to use to boot, i chose the raid array and the boot screen appeared. no option for safe mode. just looked through the manual and didnt spot anything about it.

edit: i have a program from work to remove startup items thats better then msconfig. i just cant figure out hot to get into safe mode.

edit: fixed some grammar errors.

one sec ill look for you...well, try

EDIT...well yea, F8 didnt work as you said (same thing happened to me)

My alternative is to rip out the power cord when XP is loading up (hey it works :p)...then next time you boot up, itll ask if u want safe mode

mouse is still screwed up.

that has nothing to do with the card. go into control panel, double click mouse, click the pointer options tab, and then reduce the speed using th slider.

yea i dont think thats the issue. its right where i had it before. its weird, i move the mouse and the pointer moves reallll slow at first, then just shoots across the screen. well i got into safe mode. uninstalled ati tool. uninstalled vid driver and ran driver cleaner, reinstalled drivers (all from keyboard). i couldnt get the drivers to install from safemode so i let it boot normally to see what would happen, and i got logged in and to the desktop with no problems, it was just at a low resolution cause of no drivers. got the drivers installed and restarted and when the windows boot screen finished the monitor went into power saving mode and nothing comes up. i can boot back into safe mode and it says the drivers and everything are installed.

Boot into vga mode and see if it will let you change the resolution and refresh rated to 800x600@60hz. I wonder if a setting got changed in the cards bios itself. Rabit bios editor should show you where your clock speeds are. See if there at default.

gah, chose enable vga mode, went to display properties, tried 800x600 @ 60hz and 1024x768 @ 60. as soon as i hit apply screen goes black and it goes into powersaving mode. gonna download rabit bios thing on here now and put on flash drive and reboot.

edit: its showing the core clock and the memory clock at the right settings.

edit: should i try doing a windows install repair. i dont really want to format if i dont have to.

edit: it says the drivers are installed and the device is working properly. did i fry my new card?

Repair probably won't fix anything.
The card probably isn't fried if it's working at all.

It sounds like a driver issue honestly. I'm not sure how ATI Tool works/loads. If it's makes changes via. the registry, they could be stuck in there? But you ran the remover and reinstalled the drivers...? I'm almost stumpped. But I won't give up yet.
So, In VGA mode you have a desktop? This means the video memory is holding the GUI and the GPU is properly rendering that memory to the monitor. It quite literally reads the memory and displays it to the screen in real time. If you move something on the screen it's moving around in the video card's RAM. Changing the display settings causes the display to black out? Can you enter any menu's in the monitors onscreen setup and see if it shows the signal properties? example: 150hz refresh which may be beyond the capabilities of the display = black screen.

If its working in Safe/VGA mode, but not windows, it sounds like software/drivers are playing up

if i boot up normally as soon as the windows boot screen goes off it goes into power saving mode. if i boot with enable vga mode or safe mode then it gets to the desktop in low resolution and if i change a resolution then it goes into powersaving mode. gonna try uninstalling drivers again and running driver cleaner then reinstall.

edit: welp, uninstalled the drivers, restarted. ignored the found new hardware window. ran driver cleaner and removed everything ati. restarted, went through 4 found new hardware screens. x1950 series, plug and play monitor, x1950 series secondary, some ati vivo thing. in that order, restarted and let boot normally, had the osd up on the windows boot screen and as soon as it went off it went into power saving mode again. and the osd info said 640x480 @ 60hz the whole time till it went off.

That really sounds like what happened to me when I got my drivers mess up.
(By trying to OC at ATiTool, I didn't know back then lol)

I have IGP, so I just disable my PCI-E card and go into safe mode then kick ass all the mess up drivers and ATiTool.

It went black and the fan go at 100% right?

so you just plugged the monitor into a intergrated graphics port, booted into windows, uninstalled the drivers and ati tool, reinstalled drivers and bam, it worked?
