Good morning guys,

could someone give me some tips what i've to look for
when i want to overclock (flash) my graphics card
Atlantis Sapphire 9800Pro to an 9800XT?

Card specs I know:

* R360 Chip
* 128 MB Ram (don't know manufacturer)
* 256-bit memory interface

I just ordered

1x Zalman ZM80D-HP VGA Cooler
1x Zalman ZM-OP1

[edit]
I changed my order to Zalman VF700-CU VGA Cooler
[/edit]

which should be enough for cooling it, i hope. Right?

- What BIOS do I have to use?
- What should I prepare before the overclocking (test speeds or something)?
- Which steps should i actually do to flash it?

Thank you very much in advance.

Ron

Read this guide, you'll find answers for most of your questions in it:

http://www.rojakpot.com/(r3u3h1551nrhtz554rbj4r55)/default.aspx?location=3&var1=92&var2=0

One thing, it's vital that you find what brand is the RAM on your video card, as you'll need to download a BIOS image that is especific for that manufacturer, you cannot mix BIOSes from different RAM brands, if you do so, the flash procedure won't work.
If your RAM manufacturer is Hynix, I can e-mail you the BIOS image you need, if your card's RAM is from a different manufacturer (like samsung or infineon) look for the appropriate image in the BIOS collection found on this website.
The cooler you ordered should be good enough, download and install Atittool, then read the quickguide found in this forum to see how to use atitool, and find out if your card can handle XT speeds without problems
Good luck. :)

Thank you for your answer.
I'll try to get it working when the cooler is shipped.

Thanks,

BIOS Question:

If i had Samsung RAM, i would choose
GeCube 9800 XT 128 MB BIOS, right?

Is it not neccessary to take a bios from the
same manufacturer which has built my graphics card?

[edit]

install Atittool, then read the quickguide found in this forum
Sorry, i can't find the quickguide. Where is it?

[edit-2]

I was blind, i think this is what you meant. :)
(Searched for it in the forums... LoL)

[/edit-2]

[/edit]

Thanks,
Ron

Hello Nergal,

thanks for the useful link.

15th Warlock linked to a howto on rojakpot.com.
The author of the article writes the following:
First, use this tool, RadLinker to overclock the card to 412MHz core and 365MHz memory. Test this overclock in 3DMark 03, Aquamark 3 as well as this program - RTHDRIBL.

Please DO NOT use ATITool for artifact checking due to inaccuracy and inconsistency. You will also need to replace the card's cooler, as mentioned earlier.
Is this true?

Thanks again,
Ron

I have used the Gecube XT BIOS on my Sapphire and it works just fine. In the end I used the Sapphire XT BIOS with the Gecubes clocks

I don't agree with that part of the guide, I've found that Atitool actually detects artifacts *before* you can spot them with your own eyes in 3Dmark or any other 3D application.
I've OC'd my card to more than 450 Mhz without getting artifacts in Doom3, 3Dmark, or any other game, but nevertheless, Atitool's fastest stable clock for my core is about 442 Mhz, which means it showed me that I was pushing the core too much way before I could detect it with my own eyes
Remember to test the XT clocks after you install the new cooler, as any clocks you may reach with stock cooling won't be valid after you install the Zalman.
Good luck :)

Just as long as that BIOS is made to work with samsung memory modules, there shouldn't be any problem
Ns shouldn't be a problem either, my card has 2.8 ns hynix RAM (rated for 357 Mhz), and I've used a 2.5 ns hynix RAM BIOS (400 Mhz rating) without any problems for more than 8 months after fitting the Cu ramsinks included with my cooler, which never get too hot.
You could add some homemade ramsinks if you get memory artifacts.

Hello Warlock, INSTG8R,

thx for your replys. I suppose the ramsinks
supplied with the Zalman VF700-CU will
do their job.

I'll post again when i successfully overclocked my card.

Thanks again to all.

Indeed they should, As for Warlock I think he's pretty brave I wouldnt go for the 2.5ns RAM Bios myself I am stickin to the 2.8 and my final clocks are 398/351 on stock cooling been running it this way for months hassle free tho I plan on pickin up an Arctic Silencer very soon(not to raise the clocks any just for better cooling)

That's what I bought the Tt Giant III for, my card temps are never too high, and I keep my card at 412/365, 24/7, even though atitool's highest stable clocks are 442/373, but I never push it that high (except for a little benchmarking :p )
When you get your silencer and cool the memory modules, you'll be able to keep your card at XT clocks all the time :)

Hello again,

i installed my new cooler (Zalman VF700-Cu) yesterday and tested the max clock speeds.
I've left ATI tool running for over an hour with 420 gpu, 390 mem and i think it's time
to flash. Maybe anyone has a clue which BIOS would be the best for my card:
Sapphire Atlantis 9800pro R360, XT-PCB
128MB DDR Samsung 2.8ns, 256-bit

Thanks again in advance,
Ron

Warlock I have a Sapphire 9800 and it has the same RAM as yours and the BIOS I used was also Hynix RAM Bios. Ron I suspect yours should also have Hynix 2.8ns RAM

Mine has Hynix. Shoulda written down the code on your RAM before you put the HS's on em coulda checked the type here on the site

That's my prob. :(
I forgot to note down the code before putting HS's on it. :(

What can go wrong if try to a flash a hynix BIOS when i've got samsung rams?

Is the ram manufacturer written down on any other chips than the rams itself?

Thanks,
Ron

Yep Manufacture is on the chip itself. Why are you so sure its Samsung RAM I mean yes Sapphire has used Samsung on there 9800Pros but if its new 9800 (can kinda tell by what version of the Catalysts came on the CD) chances are its Hynix.

Okay, maybe. Did a google search and thought i've seen more
samsung 128MB 9800pro's than hynix. But maybe i'm wrong.

So,... what could happen if i flash a hynix bios and my rams
are samsung?

- Will flashrom tell me it's failed?
- Or will it successfully flash my bios and i've got a blackscreen at next restart and
i've got to re-flash it with a PCI card?
- Or could it be in worst case that it damaged the card so i can put it into trash?

What would you do? Remove the HS's again from the chips?
Since i've got no thermal adhesive to reapply them it's a problem...

Thanks again for your reply.

Well the there is no "major" difference as long as the Ns rating is the same(2.8ns) I have looked thru the timings of most of the 9800XT BIOS's and there is very minor differences in the timings between the Samsung and the Hynix (.5 in the Write Latency ) and should have no real adverse affects Tho I do reccomend the Gecubes BIOS as it a "Safe" one using 398/351 so its within the RAMS specs 357Mhz. tho you could up the core to 412 easily enough

So, how do i know if it was the right bios for my card?
I can't really damage anything if it's wrong?

Thanks,
Ron

Put it this was I have tried both Gecube and the Sapphire BIOS's and they both work fine I just chose the Sapphire one and edited the timings to the Gecubes. To be safe just be sure you dump your orginal BIOS onto the floppy before you flash. Also note you will have to force the flash as you are changing hardware IDs

Okay, thanks.

Is it possible to read the RAM manufacturer from the
actual (original) VGA bios through ATITool or something?

Thanks again,
Ron

No not as such and I said the BIOS doesnt technically care what the RAM's Manufacturer is and I just checked the timings of the Sapphire Hynix vs the Sapphire Samsung vs my Original BIOS and the only difference is 1.0 write latency on the Hynix vs 1.5 on the Samsung and Orginal BIOS and frankly lower is better and .5 is not gonna cause any issues and mine has ran fine on stock cooling for 3 months or so(I plan on picking up an Arctic Silencer very soon)
