I have a question,i'll be running an 64 bit Vista but should i get extra 2GB from Cruacial 5300 C3 10th anny or instead i should go for 74gig raptor and a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Professional 7.1 sound card?

Do i really need 4GB to run games and Vista smoothly with apps in the background?
My spec:
8800GTX
e6600
Striker extreme
700W seasonic m12

So should i get 4GB's or go for 2 and a 74raptor & fatal1ty sound?

Thanks in advance!

no, you dont really need 4 GB witht that setup:respect:
i would say the raptor, but not the fatal1ty sound card. waste of money imo. go with the x-fi music or an auzentech card.

I'm running dual 20,1 1680x1050 widescreen monitors.

Do you think i can have photoshop, some other app stuff opened and play NFS carbon & Wow on the other window with no lag?I doubt,on XP maybe but i'll be running Vista.

What do you think about it?

"opened" yes you could run it all. Now if you have 10 other applications crunching away then yes it will take a hit to your gaming performance. As far as other programs just sitting there open? I don't think that will effect your games at all. I have had divx encoder doing batch compression in the background while I played halflife2 or quake4 online and didn't notice much. Occasionally there would be a twitch like I dropped a frame or 2 but that didn't effect my aim. :D

EDIT - XP will multitask just as good as Vista. Vista has no magic. If anything it's slowing computers down which is why I'm keeping XP and staying FAR away from Vista. I want my hardware running applications not a gui. :)

Hi

First I hope you know you need the x64 versions of Vista in order to address the 4GB ram.

if you "photoshop, some other app stuff opened and play NFS carbon & Wow" at the same time with 2GB ram, the load times in NFS Carbon and the "other apps" will be significantly slower than if you had 4GB's of ram.

Lookee here m8: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36148
They do a good comparison upon the different memory configurations you can have. And, from their tests, 4GB of ram can improve loading times much better than a 150GB raptor lol.

Hope the helps :D

Thank you very much for the informative reply. Not like the rest of the guys here.
yea i know i need 64 bit to run 4gig,so you say forget about raptors, sound cards and go straight for 4GB?

I've got like 2 options:
Crucial 5300 C3 2GB 10th anny or
Corsair Dominator 6400 Cas4

same price, crucial is hand picked and the Dominator chips are the same as the 6400 C3 so that means i wont have any trouble making it 800mhz Cas 3.

Which one to go for?

and @HookeyStreet
I would want to run it at the same time becouse i'm with dual screen setup, that means i might leave Wow if i'm flying(doing something not so important) and do some other stuff on the other screen.
Clear?

Well, you did say you have dual widescreens and multitask alot. So 4GB would very well do justice in your system.

As for the ram selection, the Crucial seems to be the better choice as Crucial is the memory company of Micron, which manufactures the D9 chips. Also, I've heard that Dominators manufactured after a certain date had their chips swapped for ProMOS's instead of the D9's. If you do go for the Dominators you may be pushing your luck.

PlanetX64 did a overclocking test on the 10th anniversaries and indeed they are D9's, handpicked too: http://www.planetx64.com/index.php?...sk=view&id=407&Itemid=14&limit=1&limitstart=3

Id go with 3 GBs. Run two 1gb sticks in Dual Channel. get 1 GIG kit in 2x512 kit. Run that in dual channel. And get a raptor. Auzentech (as I was just recently enlightened too) or X-Fi Gamer, Music or hell Extreme (platinum)

well if you are running the 64bit version of vista...it will map all 4gb...might as well get more memory. If you play battlefield2/2142...that game ususally requires 3gb of memory for very smooth game play. When i play Source Games (CSS..hl2..etc) those games usualy take about 1.5gb to 2gb of my memory (Sound cards dont give any performance gains, and most intergrated and other brands rather than creative does provide eax2.0...which is good enough. Raptors are over price just due to there name. Perpendicular recording is starting to shine over the raptors. I got a 320gb PR for my HTPC and is fast enough.

I wouldnt buy anything with the name "fatal1ty" on it out of principal. You get ripped off for the sake of a name. Just go for something out of the regular X-Fi range, the same quality for a smaller price.

What do you think about it?

with 2 gigs of ram on system, PS is hardly a ram eater
that is, until you work in HUGE resolutions

when im manipulating 8-15GB images in Photoshop, it can chew up about 1.2 GIGS of ram
it allll depends on the use of your applications

photoshop, wmp, NFS, msn and maybe a few background progs would run with no problem
i cant see WOW working at the same time, nor is it practical anyway, but if it works, good for you

my advice, if ur gonna run vista go for the ram, vista is a ram whore.

dont get an x-fi eather way, razer or auzentech or turtle beach offer better quility cards with less known incompatabilitys and software problems.

why not just go for a 1gb stick of ram and get the raptor as well? win win. upgrade another stick if you feel the need later.

for dual chanil you need matched pairs, adding a 3rd stick would drop it out of dc mode hurting intel perf
