Powercolour X800pro @xtpe artifacting and crashing......need help

Hi......i have a Powercolour X800pro flashed to xtpe with 16pipes unlocked. The problem is the card keeps artifacting and crashing when on xtpe default core speed (520/560). Lowering down the clock speed did make it stabilize.

What's my next step? Do i flash down to XT from xtpe?
I've read up a little about pencil mod......anyone can advice will it be help to stabilize my card at xtpe default clocks?

juz a side enquiry on pencil mod.......its suppose to use pencil to lower certain resistor's resistance rite? Is there need to further do the soldering part (i'm bad at soldering) :banghead:

Is there means to modify the default clock speed of xtpe bios to xt(500/500)? Coz i don't know what bios was used on this card so i suppose changing clock speed of the current bios would be the safest. Below is my bios file link.

my advice flash back to stock bios, then test the card up to xt-pe clocks, if you can get 10-20mhz over xt pe clocks stable then its probbly not the overclock thats the problem.

some cores used on pro/gt/gto cards are damnaged/flawed and cant do 16p properly(hence the dissabled pipes)

in the case of those cards your only real option is to overclock them as high as u can.

Thankx for ya reply. Any means to test it other than flashing back its original bios?

If bringing down its clock lower stabilizes it does it means i can safely use the card at lower clock values?

How long does it takes to run artifact test to comfirm its stability? Any other means to test for card stability?

check the coretemps i bet it gets to hot, stock cooling is BAD on many/most x800pro vivo/xt pe cards compared to what they really need when overclocked.

have u tryed setting the fanspeed at 100%?

Tried 100% fan speed. Its on Arctic cooler 4 rev2 already.
Its around 40deg at rest and 67deg at load before the crashing comes.

If i'm able to tame it not to crash at lower clock speed what is the best method to test and verify this cards runs well at lower clock? Run artifact test for a duration say 10mins?

I've heard many x800pro couldn't handle XTPE clock speed after flashing and requires a pencil mod.

no run games/benchmarks and watch for problems, and he/she shouldnt have sold it preflashed if it wasnt stable at those clocks.

run 3dmark 05 and watch for artifacts, run glexcess and watch for artifacts(google for it its free)
run aquamark watch for artifacts.

and i duno the only ones i flashed to xp pe where old first gen cards and every one of them worked without any mods

Will try stressing it with battlefield 2142 and 3dmark tests.

Any way to modify my current xtpe bios to 500/500 default if its stable on lower clocks? Or should i flash a powercolour x800xt (500/500) rom in?

u can use rabit to edit the bios, i would just flash the lower bios for testing, my guess is that it may not beable to do 16pipes.

Will try as dolf suggested to flash down to X800xt with his automated flashing utility. Hope it will work out right.

it just takes a conductive pen or rear window defoger rep paint(cheap) i have done that with gt and gto cards,VERY easy

I've heard of high failure rates of hard modding. Don't dare to try as i'm pretty poor in hard modding though i'm a electronics student.

Set my card to 510core 525mem clock speed and ran some test
Juz tried battlefield 2142 for 20mins at max reso, 12mins of Artifact scanning using ati tools, 3dmark05 completed with 59xx score......no crash.....no artifacting. Didn't turn on my air-conditioner and i'm starting to sweat in room. Card hits 67deg at max temperature.

Is this card safe at xt clocks to say? Or these test is not enough at all?

yeah should be ok if its running fine now.

and the hard mod in this case is just connecting 2 contacts, VERY easy and FULLY reverceable(just scratch off the paint and its 12pipes again)

*update*
Flashed with dolf utility to x800xt(500/500)......installed drivers. No problem so far.
Anyone can suggest a very good way to stress test this card for problems?

Say ashensugar.....how much does it cost for a x850pro or xt card on your side? Been wanting to import one x850 as my region doesn't have it.

check newegg for best retail/oem prices (for refrannce)

my advice if ur on agp would be just hold with what u got, the perf diffrance between pro and xp pe isnt that huge, and the 850 isnt much of a boost over 800, just small changes.

if ur gonna get a new card look for an x1650xt its a good value card, lots of shader3 power, above, for agp price/perf the best ur gonna get really is what u have, the down side is that the 800 range cant do shader3 and some new games are starting to requier it now.

my reccomendation if you have pci-e would be an x1800gto, x1900gt or x1950gt for the price they are going to be a better value then an x850 since they wont hold you back on newer games.

Yea....these newer x1000 series card are great but the price factor is pulling me back. Will be sticking around x800 cards.
If comparing sapphire x800pro 256MB and Galaxy 6600gt 128mb dual DVI which is better?
One power one newer tech. Only one to keep.

x800 any day, the 6600 has ps3 but isnt usefull with hdr because of the perf loss incured trying to run heavy ps3 games.

if u just want a cheap decent performer x1300xt is a good buy most places, its a renamed x1600pro, my buddys cant do as much aa/af as his x800xt could but it can do hdr+aa in farcry without to much trouble(2xa+hdr@7) thats plenty for most people(1280x1024 is his max monotor res) he got it as a hold over till he can afford an x1900/1950 card, its not as fast as his 800 but it offered stuff the 800 cant, video playback acceleration(gpu based decode) and hdr, and such, he almost waited for the x1650xt but needed a new card b4 the 1650xt was avalable on newegg.

he still has the 800's(2 diffren models/version) in other systems but once he saw farcry with hdr he was hooked lol

X800 > X850, if memory serves they use different cores, your card can likely do XTPE speeds, but you need a X800XTPE BIOS, not a X850XTPE BIOS.

Mine was already on x800xtpe bios(520/560) till i flashed down to x800xt(500/500). But it doesn't do well.....artifacts and blue screen. Could this be fixed doing a pencil mod to enable it run on xtpe speed?

x800/850 series of card was the godliest card known to me when i started PC diy.....never tried the x1300/x1600 series but heard its improvement in terms of technology but lose out to x800 in terms of firepower.

I'll still stick to this holy grail till can afford PCI-E card. This card shall stick to my 478pin system till retirement.

Prolly will try to bring this card to xtpe if pencil mod can help to further clock it up.

Ran artifact scan for 1hr, ran 3dmark05 a few times and played battlefield 2142 for like 2hrs.....no signs of problem. Guess my card is back on track now. :toast:

What's the average safe temperature for x800xt? My card is bout 42deg at idle and between 50~55deg when using. Hits 68~69deg when at load doing stress test. I'm thinking of resitting the arctic silencer 4 and do a little cleanup as i see heavy dust clogging the copper fins inside.

I know artifacting is a sign when card cannot take the clock speed. Will tweaking my mobo to supply slightly more volt say 0.1v to stablize it? My ddr rams i recalled keeps coming to blue screen and fail mem diag when i accidentally set the volt supply lower by 0.1v and i almost rmaed my rams till i resetted bios.
