AMD x2 3600+ and Biostar

I was wonderig if anyone could help me out with a little problem... I recently purchased an AMD Dual core 3600+ and Biostar t550 combo as an upgrade. The nice thing about this combo (or so I thought...) was the included OC capabilities in the bios and software... now my problem... If I use the automatic settings... I don't see any results... If I use the manual settings... I'm getting nowhere... wont post. And if I try to use the utility from windows... it locks up on me... Any of you gurus out there want to help me out and see if you can help me see what I'm doing wrong??? I'm not looking for major numbers, but would at least like to push it up to around 2.4 ghz... I'm using kingston ddr 667 1gb, and the previously stated combo, with an ATI Radeon x1650 pro 512mb vid card. Thanks! :banghead:

Ok, I have the exact same combo and I can tell you what to do. First put it on manual OC.

Step 1. Lower the HTT to NB fid to 4X.
Step 2. Enable max memory clock and change the RAM speed to 533
Step 3. Go into the DRAM setup, then timings and change them to 5-5-5-15, it should be the top 4 settings in the menu.
Step 4. Go back to the main OC menu and change the ram voltage to 2.1V
Step 5. Raise the FSB.

Also follow my guide, the one that Namslas posted, that will help.

I am running my memory at 4-4-4-10 1T DDR 400. My CPU voltage is stock, my HTT is at 3x and my FSB is 290, that should give you a baseline to follow.

Still no luck... when I put in the values you said, with the first one, it wouldn't post... with the values you said you had put in on your own... it said in the memtest that it was running at 1000 mhz ... so underclocked...? With the v12 settings it SAYS it's around 2375 mhz, but then when I try to check the cpu with different progs it says it's at 1.9... :confused:

On a side note when I check the values on wcpuid the real time clock jumps between 1249.99 and then to 2374.99 ... and on that same screen processor one shows up as 2249 and processor 2 shows up as 1249... and CPUZ shows the exact same thing

Yeah, leave NPT fid alone. That is your CPU multiplier and the reason you were getting 1300MHZ. That may be partially my fault for calling the HTT "fid".

make sure u have any protection to do with the default cpu speed in the bios dissabled this can stop ur oc

Got it up to what you had it at, with the fsb at 290 stock voltage... not sure how high is safe on the voltage... so I dunno how much further it can go. except I used ddr 533 cause it seems to be working like that... was there a reason you went with 400? and what did you mean about turning off protection? I dunno if there's anything on there that will protect it like that, but thanks for the help, any more suggestions would be appreciated (shows up as 2.75 ghz now!)

Sweet, your ram can go higher than mine it would seem. The voltages are plenty safe, just make sure your fully loaded temps don't go above 45-50*C, which they shouldn't.

You can keep bumping it up 5MHZ at a time and see how high you can go, some people are getting 3.1GHZ out of it.

There is one thing I am curious about, what kind of hard drive do you have? IDE or Sata?

IDE hard drives connected on a IDE controller card, since I didn't pay attention to this mobo only having ONE IDE connector, lol... now here's the kicker.... I can only boot in safe mode now... would that have anything to do with the clocking??? :confused:

it either hangs on the windows screen with the green bar going across, or will pixelate (spelling) and restart. (Using vista... which I HATE btw) Ran memtest from bios, and let it complete and it had NO errors all the way though... so I dunno... could the overclocking have made the O/S unstable?

No the clocks wouldn't have caused that. Does it has a "use the last settings that worked"? If it does, try that, something may have gotten corrupted.

I tried to do it with last known settings, and it didn't work, but as soon as I kick it back down to the stock settings then it boots right up

Then it sounds like a ram issue to me. Try dropping it to DDR 400 and see. My kingston 667 ram refuses to boot with it at 533MHZ.

I've heard not to push the voltage past a certain point on the dual cores... but since I reformatted and reinstalled XP, I lost all my links and can't seem to find the post do you happen to know what the max voltage should be?

I have taken mine up to 1.475, but I don't reccomend that. I would stay around 1.45 with good cooling. 1.4 with stock.

I dunno how well my cooler will perform... bought it for like $10 from newegg says 36 cfm, and it's a decent sized heat sink and fan (92mm I believe) so would you suggest 1.45 with that?
