I tried to install the X64 version on vista X64 but got the error "this update does not apply to your system". Huh?

I got that with x64 too. I'm guessing it is because I realized I had already installed this update through Windows Update.

If you have vista 32bit on your system thats the error code you get. you need to format your hard drive and do clean install of vista 64bit..

Nice. Next thing will be fixing software sound and bad network behavior in late 2009 year.
