Quick Case Mod To Lower Temps

Here is a quick case mod to lower your temps,Like most cases at the back you have these silly holes for 80mm fans that restrict air flow,here is what you can do to save 2 - 5 D off your current temps,Simply cut out a perfect hole or cut away with tin snips and install fan with a grill.Still have to do the other one as well.

but you need to get a dremal and get those sharp spot grinded down!

Yes exactly .Make sure you cover your board with a good rag and some plastic,And have a small shop vac on hand while doing it,

I keep meaning to do this but can't find my tin snips (don't currently own a working dremel either, so I'm screwed without the tin snips, or a dremel, or something else to cut it)
But very nice, to show others, and you'd be much much safer and better off by taking all components out of the case, much less chance of catastrophe, and getting metal bits stuck in sockets and components, even if using a rag to cover the mobo.

Having done this in the past, I would strongly suggest taking everything out of the case no matter what you use to cut the case.

Flying metal bits are never good with small solder points.

how can someone not own a dremel??

That is the single most useful tool in the world! I love my Dremel..... but you cant buy the generic knock off, you need the real thing so you can use the different accessories!

But it was tragically taken away from me :cry:

I own one, but the bloody thing gave up on me, heheh. Although to be fair, I hardly use electric tools, I don't go about cutting things very often, but I do take things apart and put them together, so hand tools are what I use most.

Oh yes it most defiantly is! i used my dremal to mod my dads case, and my xbox and well, it would take a long time to list what all i haves used it to mod stuff

This mod would allow for more dust to get in the tower....Unless you put a filter but in that case its almost the same as the iron it has in the first place.

Those are exhaust fans, I don't think that TOO much dust can enter there :rolleyes:

Actually, the mod was done on the rear fan covers, so there's already very minimal dust entry. Most cases include filters at the front, where it's most important, and the ones that don't, I suggest grabbing a sheet of aluminium (or aluminum for the Americans) mesh. Used some on an old case, and dust stuck to it better than the crap that was included with the case.
Also, a car air filter is a good idea. Machine washable, range of sizes, cheap, and probably the best compromise between air filtration and air flow.

Too much cant but especially when the tower is off there will be more dust entering.
But yes this applies in a bigger degree if the fans suck air into the tower.

If this was a fan that was sucking air the dust would need 3-4 days to settle on the CPU COOLER and other components....I know cause i tried it once

Now the impact on performance i dont know but it should take a year or so for enough dust to settle in order to cripple the tower

Overclocked maybe.

I've seen systems with about a half a CM layer of dust still operate pretty well.

I've seen newer systems have issues with less dust buildup, my sister's old P3 system had almost a CM, the intake fan was so clogged it spun slowly, just rediculous, and it still ran fine for what she did. Of course I performed a severe cleaning for her PC, and to this day it runs fine. I try to keep dust buildup minimal...
