2600pro or 2600xt

Hi,
Looking at getting one of these, made by sapphire. Either the 2600 pro 512mb or the 2600xt 256mb gddr3. There is only £7 in it, I'm gonna be playing EVE online, Half Life 2, rollercoaster tycoon 3. Any idea whether to go for more mem or faster clock. Any help would be great thanks.

Go for the 2600XT. Good card. I'm gonna buy one for my m8 this week to replace his X1900 GT.

I suppose that although there is half the memory it will probably be able to use it twice as fast so the 2600xt would be better as the pro only has ddr2 mem as opposed to the xt's gddr3. Would I be right in thinking this?

if you can get the xt with the gddr4 memory, technicks what is wrong with a x1900gt ? they keep on par with the 2600 certainly in all dx9 games plus with having the higher memory bit it will work better at higher res

Just checked the prices, the gddr4 is £25 more than the gddr3 version, its too much, but do you all agree that it is worth the extra £7 and getting the 2600xt 256mb gddr3 instead of the 2600 pro 512mb ddr2?

I agree it's worth the extra £7. Keep in mind though, don't expect to get it then OC it like you can a video card that has a power connector. 75W isn't really a whole lot of power (that's the amound the PCI-E slot gives).

and ati bring out the r700 and the get a cheap 8800gts or x2900? wouldnt that make sense when stuff like crysis ut3 and all games go mainstream

like i said before 75w is more then enough to a card that doesn't have voltage control, and if you do a vmod there's a good chance the pcb, caps, etc can't take it

Nah, remember W1zzard's review of the 2600xt? He got a pretty lame OC before it crashed.

My HD2600XT got a higher OC then W1zzard's...and PT's got his oc'ed to the same levels as the GDDR4 version(almost)

Why??? My X1900GT is on par with the 2600XT in most benchmrks and narrowly misses it on some. However I reckon it's better in games as DX10 cards always score well in synthetic benchies. With it oc'd I reckon it's better than the GDDR3 2600XT's in nearly everything (I get 5621 in 3D06). It's not worth the upgrade. The X1900GT is a great card.

Thanks for all your greatly helpful posts, I have a 9600 pro 256 mb at the moment (no prizes for guessing why I'm upgrading!) I just wanted to say, I only plan on going up to a res of 1280x1024 so would I notice £20 worth of performance difference between the gddr3 and gddr4.

Just checked prices again and for about the same price as the 2600xt gddr3, i can get the nvidia 8600GT 256MB GDDR3. Any thoughts???

Really? Interesting thanks, some of the review i've been looking at show once AA is turned on the 2600xt performance drops and the 8600gt is better...?

Interesting point. I was just taking a look at the charts@ Tom's Hardware and it really looks like they are trading blows. When you kick the AA on, it really does look like it depends on the game/benchmark. I would still say 2600xt because it's cheaper. (Well last time I looked at newegg it was) As far as overclocked 8600 gt to a overclocked 2600 xt, I have no clue.

More googleing!!!

Have just looked about a bit more, I think that i will get the 2600xt gddr3, not worth the extra for gddr4, not for most games, you gain about 1 fps! Also the ati has 120 stream processor units as opposed to 32 on the nvidia. According to review sites, the 2600xt has more potential to beat the 8600gt once the drivers improve and make full use of all 120 units. Apparently in the benchmarks and game performance, drivers are holding the ati's back and hardware is holding the nvidia's back. So ati seems the better choice as drivers can be improved, hardware once purchased cannot.

2600xt. Just remember your buying a card that cant realistically handle DX10, period.
