XIGMATEK is a very good brand.

I would have loved it if you had compared the cooler to the ThermalRight Ultra and the Scythe infinity. Those two are the most popular heatsinks at the moment.

really gonna put thermalright in hot water as they have a product with basically the same temps as the ultra 120 for half the price.. i see competition--> lowering of prices--> cheaper cooling for us!

Until thermalright manufactures the Ultra 120 Extreme with a perfectly flat base

Yeah for now its better bang for buck... i have to agree, the prices for this cooler are ridiculously low, compared to the other solutions. Even the 92mm version costs about the same as an Arctic Freezer PRO 7, yet, it blows the freezer pro 7 away.

Its a relatively compact 120mm cooler imho... and you have to realise that to obtain Ultra 120 Extreme perf, you NEED to have the fan at max, which isnt very quiet. The Ultra 120 eXtreme only needs a low RPM (1.2kish) fan just to get that perf. Ultra 120 shines with a 9 bladed fan due to the highly restrictive design of it however...

I'd lap the HDT to get mirror base heatpipes though...

One comment I'd make was how straightforward installing the cooler was. The push pins arent crap, they do their job.

Remember guys, the actual springyness comes from the LGA 775's socket, and NOT the CPU mounting method. On K8 thats the case, but 775 is different. They do their job holding the CPU cooler down. However one complaint I would make, is in constricted areas installation is a bit tedious, mainly becasue the fan is in the way of the clips... and installing it on is rather difficult.

I question Frostytech, especially when they put the Ultra-120 2nd, but the Ultra-120 Extreme 4th. So according to them the Ultra-120 outperforms the Ultra-120 Extreme...

Edit: Oh I see what they did. They used a weaker fan on the Ultra-120 Extreme than the Ultra-120...that explains a lot, and also isn't a good way to review products.

Yeah, I was going to say, everywhere I look the extreme is a lot better. I can't believe that they would place a worse fan on it... hmmmm

You need to look at the whole thing. There is barely a one degree difference between them but the eXtreme is 9.2dBA quieter. Considering noise doubles every 3dBA the eXtreme presents a whooshing sound while the Ultra-120 is clearly a very audible noise. It doesn't need to be the same fan because they are two different products (forums are here if you want to directly compare them ).

Actually, I've tested it, 1.4k RPM fan on Ultra 120 and the HDT S1283... performance is VERY similar, the xigmatech to my dismay doing better. The thing is that the Xigmatech fan barely spins at 5v; the speed which frostytech were testing it at, it spins around what, less than 500RPM @ 5v.

If you lap the base of the Ultra 120 flat on the otherhand... Performance just tears the competition.

There is NO way that the GPower pro II does better than the Xigmatech btw, TPU reviewers, I would recommend you base cooling results over "Rise over ambient" instead of just the temperatures. (Maybe i should do a review myself...)

I got my response back from Xigmatek about I don't like the push pins....guess what...

They sending me a free bolt on kit ! All I have to do is send them invoice and bar code and they will send me the bolt on kit when it arrives, they said sorry for not giving me options on mounting =D

p.s. I asked what if my friend doesn't like the push pin too, they said they aware of this and they will offer free kit to anyone that bought the HSU on Feb and Jan.

2 thumbs up on customer care! I forgot when was the last time I found someone that cares their customer =D

No, it needs to be the same fan if you are going to be comparing the two directly and ranking them based on cooling ability. For fanless products that require you add your own fan, the same fan must be used to provide a fair comparison.
