Hi all,

Need some advice upgraded computer 2 weeks ago.

Abit AN8 MB
3500+ 64 .13
Corsair (TWINX1024-3200C2PT) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200
connect 3d x850 xt.

The system run fast and stable. The problem is the cpu temp it idles at 65 C and gets up to 79 c  at full load. I have had to move the beep warnings up. Spoke to a tech from the shop and reckons the temp sensor is probably faulty if the system is running fine with no crashes or lock ups. Does this sound like a reasonable explanation.

It may be, if so you should get the mobo replaced as it is clearly not working properly. do you have decent airflow through your case, are you using the stock heatsink and fan?. You could rtry an aftermarket cooler that will drop the temp, also like I said make sure you have air moving through your case.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. The airflow through my case is pretty good. Sounds like a jump jet taking off!!!!! 2x 12cm fans at front 2 at back and a 4 fan psu. The case temp is normally around the 34 mark. the room has 3 other pc in it so it does get very warm. The heatsink and fan are stock but used some AS 5 when putting the heatsink on after cleaning off the standard gunk. Would an aftermarket make that much difference, from what i can see it should idle 30 c lower lol. The only problem with returning the MB is the hastle of having no computer :( Any suggestion as to which cooler to try.

XP-90

is there a BIOS update for your motherboard that recalibrates sensor readings?

XP-90 or the XP-120 . both are decent coolers.
Good point nightelf84, I would look for a bios update from you mobo mfg before taking it back.

Thanks again. OK I have flashed my MB bios still same temp. I also tried motherboard monitor 5 just to see if it had the same read out which I believe uses the diode on the the cpu it was the same temp I wonder if it is the cpu that is faulty. What does it sound like? What should the temp be with no OCing?

should definitely be lower than what you're reading.. Again, check your heatsink installation. Take the heatsink off and check whether its making contact with the core.. Also, make sure that the fan is spinning at decent rpms

Are you sure you put enough AS5 on? They say a half a grain of rice but I usually do a little more than that.

See if you burn your finger on the heatsink, if its really running 65ºC idle and 79ºC load you should burn your finger almost right away on the heatsink.

I agree with feeling the heat sink to see if it's hot. However I would just take it off and make shure it's installed properly. Improper installation is usually the problem. You're useing AS5 so it's not that big of a deal to do.

Hi and thanks for all the help and advice. I will look at reseating my heatsink at the weekend. I hope it is on ok as it was me that put it there but it is possible there is not enough as5 so that might help. The real problem may just be dogy diode as it seems to be at that temp straight from start to bios after being off overnight. I think I will also get a new heatsink and fan as suggeted and also some better cooling for gxf card as well. Also the heatsink is quite cool to the touch just warmer than skin I judge.

P.S. Check out this post under graphics cards.
