So im looking to build a computer that will be able to run Crysis at 1920x1200 with all settings at max and achieve at least 60-70 fps. Is this even possible or am i dreaming right from the start?

I have about $5000-6000 AUD to throw at a box alone (i.e. no keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers), and was looking to go as follows:

Mobo: ASUS Maximus Extreme
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850
Memory: Corsair Dominator 4Gb 1600MHz CAS 7-7-7-20 DDR3
GPU: 2 x R680 in CrossFire (The new ATi Cards that are due soon)
Case: Cooler Master CM Stacker 832 Evo
Power Supply: CoolerMaster Real Power M1000 1000w ATX 2.3 Power Supply

Will this do the trick, and other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

True, but they sacrifice quality through their so-called "optimizations".

I don't think it is even possible.

www.tomshardware.com has a similar feature about building a crysis PC. Even running a 2x GTX Ultra in SLI they can't max the game out. I don't think the hardware exists quite yet.

That said, you should be able to have all settings on at least high, and some set to very high (physics, volumetric effects etc)

How much is the CPU costing you? In the UK it is still about £600, whereas a Q6600 will only be about £200. The Q6600 will easily exceed QX6850 speeds if you overclock it.
If you have the money to spend and you want to overclock the QX6850 then your selection is fine, but if you want to spend a bit less then tha Q6600 would work just fine.

Can't really comment about the graphics cards. My GTS 320Mb runs with almost everything on high at 1680x1050. The main limitation for taking things any higher is the Video RAM.

Well for that $ amount you might as well get the QX9650 that'll be coming out in a couple of weeks (reports are it can get to 4Ghz on air, but those were ES chips, but they should still be good to go). Also wouldnt bother with 4GB of DDR3 even if your using an x64 OS. 2 should be fine, and if you find you need more, you can always get them at a later date (and probably cheaper).

I disagree. Moving from 2Gb to 4Gb definitely helped my machine run Crysis - roughly a 7-8fps increase. Doesn't sound much but it is when you are running at ~30fps. If you check the RAM usage, Crysis uses about 1Gb alone - then add in all the background stuff from Vista etc.

When i had 2Gb, vista would sit using about 35-40% of my RAM. (or ~800Mb)
Now that I have 4Gb, it uses about 30-35% (or ~1.2gb)

Vista seems to scale itself to how much RAM you have, and because I have 4Gb, it uses a greater amount and it definitely runs quicker.

Besides, RAM is extremely cheap so you might as well!

Do you guys think my PC will have any trouble running it on low-medium settings?

i was going to go with NVidia in SLi, but it would mean getting the Striker Extreme which isnt X38 compatible iirc, and its also only DDR2. Is there much of a performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM?

As for overclocking, i have never really delved into that area, as i would be too scared of "blowing up" my expensive machine, but i suppose i would probably give it a go.

As for the CPU price, its about $1300 or so here in Aus, with the one below it at $700.

I suppose i forgot to mention that i need to get longevity out of whatever system i buy, as im also not too far off purchasing a house, and all my money will forever drain into that sucker.

And my current system is also:

Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLi Premium
CPU: Athlon 4600+ x 2
GPU: Leadtek 7800 GTX
Memory: 1Gb Corsair DDR 2-2-2-5 i think 800MHz

Is there any news about an X38 Board with DDR3 and SLi in the near future?

Not unless Nvidia licenses it to intel, which is a slim to nil chance of that happening.

Edit: HP/Voodoo PC has found a way to get Crossfire to work on an SLI board (striker extreme) with their Balckbird model, but have not seen it the other way around.

It should be fine on low settings at a fair resolution, say 1024x768. Dx9 obv.

Not much difference:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/03/pc_memory/

Not much risk of blowing it up, lol.

The thing is, you're paying a HUGE premium for the top model. The 2nd or 3rd ones down perform almost as well but at less than 1/2 the price.

I suppose i forgot to mention that i need to get longevity out of whatever system i buy, as im also not too far off purchasing a house, and all my money will forever drain into that sucker.

All the more reason to go for value options, rather than buying the top model IMO.
You're not going to be disappointed with a Q6600

It's a tough one. I would be looking at reviews of the new items (8800GT/GTS2, R680, the 45nm CPU's etc) and see how thier performance compares to the other/older models. And in three months, I would need to see what happens to prices on the older models and evaluate the price/perfomance aspects. You dont need to spend the full $5-6k you know, and still have a killer rig. You could spend $3-4k and keep some for upgrades down the road or bump up your down payment/get some furniture for your house.

just my .02

Just remember that in a year it will be worthless and it will won't be the best any more.

Honestly, it's a completely fruitless voyage. You'd never be able to ALWAYS have the best unless you have bottomless pockets

I'd settle for something with the right price:performance ratio and spend the rest of the money on a house or something which will actually hold value or make money.
