It's easy. How do you think a midrange card should perform on newer games?
For example I would call a good midrange card if it is capable of:
Crysis on High at 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 smooth gameplay.
UT3/GOW/COD4/Bioxhock Highest settings at 1600x1200, 1680x1050, smooth gameplay at 4xAA.
