system slooowdown

this damn process has appeared out of nowhere and is making my system run noticeably slower, where if i click any open window in my taskbar it actually takes about 5 seconds for it to appear, is there any way to get rid of this stupid process, its eating up to 90% of my cpu

Windows System Idle Process is kind of weird. If it says its using 90% of your CPU - that means that 90% of your CPU is not running anything. To get your speed back up use MS config to turn off things like Fast user switching, Indexing services, Print Spooler(if no printer), Secondary login, and updater services(just remember to check for updates once in a while), etc. These things will take up "access speed" when the CPU System Idle Process is "running"(doing nothing).

ive followed the optimization guide on here, plus a few others. been through everything youve just mentioned, edited some registry settings too. defragged, used bootvis to optimize startup. all i have starting up is avg and realtek audio, startup takes about 3 loong minutes and anything that i click on takes at least a couple seconds to respond. ive only got about 25 processes running, ive never noticed system idle process before and its now that my comp has 'slowed' down . the last thing i instaleld were drivers for my printer and that was it

You might have caught a virus, download free version of AVG and run it along with SuperAntiSpyware might just find your problem.

System Idle process = the amount your CPU is free. More is the "CPU usage" for this item, more your CPU is free.

Your WIA service is starting since you probably either A) Have a multifunction printer, or B) have a card reader on the printer or C)have crappy drivers.

Any of the above could be true.

Go to Start-->Run inthe box that opens type "services.msc" with out the quote marks, and scroll down to the bottom of the page and see if "Windows Image Acquistion" service si running and set to automatic.

My Canon stays off most of the time as everytime the system boots it tries to look for disks in the card reader, plus initilises the scanner and starts the WIA service, I finally learned to leave it off unless I was going to use it.

steevo, by multifunction you mean scanner etc.? its just a printer but i did find wia in services but it wasnt running, disabled it anyway. why would i wanna make it automatic for if i have no other use than to print?

sitting here typing system idle >80 yet i still have 'lag' with anything i click on or do :banghead:

any other ideas? im gna try uninstall them drivers and see if it makes a difference

well so far , i tried to play FEAR and the video is so jerky like it has trouble playing it. this in comparison to last night when i was playing FEAR with no problems at all.

uninstalled everything that was related to the printer, nothings changed.
uninstalled gfx card drivers, updated to latest nvidia drivers, nothings changed.

downloaded spybot s&d, when i click it, it runs in the task manager at 90% cpu usage but never actually loads up :/

im lost as to what this could be :(

steevo would you like hardware or software report?

Sounds like a hardware malfunction, like a overheating CPU that is throttling down. Thus the whole report.

Or check your temps.

Software A lot.

Windows XP no longer has control over the l2 cache unless it is mapped through the memory addresses directly, and that hasn't been done for a long time. The old motherboards that had 512Kb or 1M on the board itself is where that key comes into play, as it was considered part of your physical RAM and was directly accessible by address.

Some people have gotten a boost out of older systems that don't report the memory pool to windows through the drivers, or through the BIOS, but the CPU in modern processors is in charge of the L2 Cache.

The L2 cache problem was a problem with Windows and socket 478 Prescotts. It wouldn't use all 1M, it was a known problem. It doesn't affect any socket 775 processors, so your Celeron 420 won't have that problem.

I know this might be a long shot, but check to see if any of your drives are in PIO mode.

Go into Device Manager, and find the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Go into the properties of each channel and under Advanced Settings everything should read Ultra DMA. If anything is set to PIO that is probably your problem. Unintall the Channel then reboot and it should fix it.
