so i went on newegg just to look at proces and i came across vista...the "OEM" version was like 170 for the 32bit version and i didnt understand it said
"windows vista ultimate 32bit oem for system builders"
but then not understanding the term oem or having a rough grasp for what it really encompassed i turn to wikipedia and it turns out some oem software is limited or ment or locked to certain hardware....i didnt really get it though..it said "for system builders" so what i want to know is...if someone were to get a oem vista disk...would you still be able to build and change your rig? would u be able to call them and ask for your key to be reset without much trouble like it is with xp? does the oem version of vista have limited functionality?

I attended an ATI/Microsoft seminar in Tampa last year and they talked about OEM Vista at length. Most of the folks at the seminar were system builders professionally and were upset because the OEM version only works as a "full" version for a period of time and then the user must "unlock" their version if they want to continue using it with full functionality.

If I understood them correctly then I would recommend staying away from the OEM version.

you have 30 days to buy the oem if you buy parts to make up a system.. a cpu, motherboard and ram.. they just need to know how you got the parts through them

ColdStorm is trying to say you must buy at least a motherboard and cpu together to be able to purchase a Vista OEM.

I think .......

you have 30 days to take newegg up on the oem offer... after 30 days they don't allow you to do it.. from what I found out... and jr your right.. you need the basics of a new system in order to get the oem price... AKA barebones system

I did notice in the article I threaded above that it mentions the possibility of saving a few bucks if you use an upgrade version of vista. I think you just have to have a previous MS OS disk laying around to do that....Also, vista is tied to the mobo specifically, so if you change your mobo down the road there could be some hassles. I know with xp you could usually workaround that but I'm not sure on vista cause I haven't tried yet....

i have seen nothing anywhere that says vista oem is in any way different than xp oem.

oem version of xp only works as a "full" version for 30 days before you have to "activate" it or it will quit working, and vista says you have to "unlock" it within 30 days or it will quit working as a "full" version. its the same thing.

the link posted by thoughtdisorder simply mentions how the oem version of vista is licensed for 1 application (computer) only (just like the oem xp is) and buying an upgrade version costs the same as buying a oem version (again, just like the oem xp is) so i see nothing is any different than before.

I believe you are correct. I have done some more looking into it (God bless Google) and I have found that to be the case. I know at the seminar I attended there was alot of griping about how MS was going to make folks unlock their version to a full version for more $$$$. It seems MS actually listened and made the process essentially the same as xp.

:respect: Google

so i would just click activate windows and it would be done? or would i have to pay the diff for the real version? also it shows u can buy the oem from newegg without anything else if all you have to do is lcick activarte than how do i need to prove anything? also what and how would i prove it? and also would it be like xp? i know in vista if you change your hardwarwe like 3 or so times it askes you to activate it again its happened to me....would i just be able to call microsoft and have then re activate my copy if i changed my mobo? or is that one of the limitations of oem?

look at specs. I don't know if getting a hold of M$ will you be able to do that or not... if you fork out the little bit more money then you will have no problems what so ever... its make for one system only...

all they did was change the words from "activate" to call it "unlock" oooooooooooooo wow

and you have gotten your activation ahem excuse me, your "unlock" key has gotten flagged for too many attempts to activate vista so now every time you try your number it will not automatically go through and you need to call on the phone and read off the number it gives you for them to give you an over the telephone activation key. this is what i have to do for my xp. its a PITA but your not limited in any way other than going by telephone to activate.

as long as you dont make 3 or more attempts to activate your key within a 3 month period you have no problem but once you get flagged your key is flagged forever.

Absolutely! That is infact the case. Today I have asked the question of many of my friends who are in the business of building computers and they have all said that 3 is the magic number. One did say however that if you learn to speak Indian you might get a break!

so i went on newegg just to look at proces and i came across vista...the "OEM" version was like 170 for the 32bit version and i didnt understand it said but then not understanding the term oem or having a rough grasp for what it really encompassed i turn to wikipedia and it turns out some oem software is limited or ment or locked to certain hardware....i didnt really get it though..it said "for system builders" so what i want to know is...if someone were to get a oem vista disk...would you still be able to build and change your rig? would u be able to call them and ask for your key to be reset without much trouble like it is with xp? does the oem version of vista have limited functionality?

Solaris, I thanked you as well because your question caused me to go out and seek knowledge which is always a great thing! So thank you kindly!:rockout:
