i just bought HIS HD3870 ICEQ3 Turbo edition, its factory overclocked to 850mhz core and 2390mhz memory. But the cards have some problems, some of it
- driver (catalyst 7.12 & 8.1) keeps crashed and auto recovered by ati catalyst gpu recovery, even when on desktop only
- when use ATi Tool, game COD4 hangs after some time playing, must hard reboot to recover
- when use catalyst 8.1, COD4 lags a lot
- Crysis crashed when play after some time..
- cannot play HD content properly, video lagging... eg Transformers HDDVD

Catalyst version: 7.12
OS: Vista Ultimate

If anyone got this card and experience the problems, please share it wit me and tell me what is the solution..

If anyone knows that Catalyst BETA driver suitable for this card.. the driver supplied with the card cannot use on Vista...

Check the cooling to the memory. That was exactly what happened to me when I went passive. Those memory chips really don't like anything other than active cooling.

Check the heatsink is on correctly. Check there are thermal pads between any memory heatsinks.

you think that the memory cannot handle the overclocked speed? all heatsink checked, it seems mount properly.. the cards only run COD4 without crashing when i use ATiTool and set the memory clock to default value of 2250Ghz. But why HIS release with this clock speed it the heatsink cannot take it??

best thing is to pop them a mail your problem. Another thing is to try the 7.11 drivers just in case.

1300 mean that your effective clock is 2600mhz! thats very high.. mine even cannot handle 2390 huh...

theres another problem i have, why Overdrive in CCC cannot downclock?? i hv to use ATi Tool only but it seems unstable on Vista..

Rivatuner can also under/overclock your graphics card, and it works better in Vista (I can atest to it).
If anything, maybe the graphics core or the memory were binned incorrectly, and they can't quite keep the speed up. They might have accidentally put a graphics card that can do only stock clocks, under the IceQ cooler.
I second the sending them an email advice.

Have you jammed the cooler on full (using rivatuner) to see if its a heat issue? What about under clocking it to the non turbo? What BIOS?

I've just tested mine, non-turbo edition and can clock it to 864 (though i set it at 872) and can take the ram to 1260 without any problems. Ran a 5 min game of UT3 and had no issues. With the fan jammed on full didnt go above 55 degrees. Will run 3dmark and see what happens.

Seems odd that your having issues with the turbo at 850.

i had to run my original HIS 3870 at around 830 core to be crysis stable.. i still wonder how HIS dare sell a stock clock of 850 core.. its way higher than ati reference clocks and way higher than my reference type card would go and be genuinely gaming stable..

five minutes of UT3 and a 2006 run isnt gaming stable with the 3870 card.. it seems to have a wide "not quite" stable range.. i can run my volt modded one at 918 core for 2006 or 931 for the fur bench.. i turn it down to 885 for gaming stability thow..

so i aint surprised at the odd (gaming) unstable one at 850 core..

not an atomic bios. ati calls their current bios format "atombios"

Hi, I have the stock version of the iceq3, i found on the drivers from ati's site, it used to crash without OC, even on windows desktop. i think it is just cus card so new and drivers so new. I found it went away when I downloaded the 8.1 hotfix from ati support. Go to amd graphics support, find the 3870 and there will be a hotfix there, make it easier here is the link:
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=31625
I have also tried the 3870x2 driver posted on here, but havent used it much to see if that changes things for better or worse.

well unless HIS have some magic secret or special speed binned chips it strikes me they are simply clocking their Turbo cards too high at stock..

its possible the general run of chips are coming of the line better but i know the two early HIS reference type cards i had would not run properly gaming stable at 850 core..

ati have had plenty of time to sort the drivers.. its not that..

Hi all!

I post this link if you want to have a HIS 3870 GDDR4 fully functional at 875core & 1300DDR(2600) mem. In gaming (don't matter if it's Crysis, COD4 etc etc) it's super stable and temp. at full load it's max. 78 Celsius degrees.

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/4342/HIS.HD3870.512.071218.html

'bye all!

Has this been modified from stock? its the same bios number as I've got. CCC reports it is running above 864 but rivatuner's output graphs tell you otherwise. What have you been using to do the clock and what confirms the clock?

JAmes.

I had this same problem with my sapphire 3870. Im almost 100% sure its a cooling issue. COD4 would freeze 2 mins into the game but once I set my fan to 60% problem solved.

the card should work as it came out of the box.. basically if u have to do what u have done it means the card at stock speeds is right on the edge of stability.. it should not be..

so yes.. u cured a problem.. but one that should not be there in the first place.. :)

ati target these cards to run at around 90 C.. if they dont there is something wrong with them..

sorry 4 da late reply... i had to reformat my pc..

after reformat to Vista Ultimate, i hv tested the gc with both catalyst 7.11, 7.12 and 8.1, this are the results
7.11 - cannot play HD content properly, games lags a lot
7.12 - driver keeps stop responding and restarted automatically
8.1 - driver not crash but COD4 a bit lagged

i think i stick with driver catalyst 8.1, even though COD4 quite lagging sometimes...HIS uses new BIOS i think, some reviews says that it doesnt lock the core speed so i can oc upto 900mhz... about the fan speed, even fan at 100% still does not give better results...
