Recently I was purchasing a new GFX card, my mate was getting one too and I thought that while we were at it we may aswell buy some new thermal paste for it. I read on here a few people reccomending MX-2. In the past I've been an AS5 guy and still have some left over. When i got my new PC i removed the horrid stock stuff, polished the rather poor cooler up a bit and stuck some AS5 on it. I had got accoustomed to an idle about 38-40 with the fans at low.

When I installed the new MX-2 there was a slight increase in temps but more noticably the fans were working a little more often that I was use to. I upped the fan activation temps and have cruised by for the last few weeks on the MX-2.

however it had been niggling me that I though the AS5 performance was superior. So today I decided to put it to the test and ram some tests, swapped the pastes (cleaning up using articleaner) and re-ran the tests. Each of the pastes were applied in the same fashion as recommended on the AS5 instuctions for C2D's.

Here are the results:
Key: P.b= Post boot. F.L=Full load. P.L=post load. G.U=general usage.
The benchmark used was a few runs of the crysis CPU test.

I ran each test as faily as I could. The intake temp was measured using a probe behind the intake at the front of my case. It should be noted that the first boot up on the MX-2 was from full cold and I have yet to test the AS5 from full cold. Intake temps slowly rise as its the morning and quite sunny, I tried to keep them as constant as possible.

Now looking at the results you might be thinking some of the following:

Your tests prove nothing, each temp is more or less the same: Yes this seems so, however in my past experiences AS5 takes about a week to settle in and usualy drop the idle temp by about 2 deg within the first 5-10 heat cycles.

Why do you care? your on a Dell POS, not OC'd and your cooler is awful: Yes, true also, however my system isnt in question. The reason I've tried the AS5 again is to keep the machine quiet and I'm just letting people know that the MX-2 advertising may not be quite as good as it looks.

This doesnt really tell us if your system is running quieter or cooler: True, I'll keep you updated on that one.

I'll also be changing the paste on my GFX card, which is currently MX-2, if it is proven that AS5 is better. I shall update this too if/when it happens.

Anyone else care to comment on their experiences with different pastes?

JAmes

Edit: I should add that temp 1 I think is my Northbridge (it goes up and down with cpu activity) I changed the thermal paste on this too, and Temp2 I think is possibly ram, it never changes really, gets a bit warmer at full load, gets a bit cooler at no load....

Did you do the burn in time? That makes a difference in temps.

Burn in time? you mean for the AS5? No this is the results immediately after installation. I expect the temps to fall, which is what I'm getting at.

thats totally subjective, you cant crown something as being better because you think it is, many things I have read say that AS5 is better, and you know what most places say, it doesnt matter! Use thermal that doesnt suck and it all works the same. The slightest variation in the amount or the method of application can cause a few degrees difference, and all chips surfaces are different.

i posted that cuz i know (MX-2 is better by 1c-2c) and i didnt want to post a link but since no1 will take my word for it

have a look yourself

to the O/P thnx for doing some testing but in the future you should prepare your methods a little better so that the testing is not flawed and you get beter results ;)

I havent used AS5 (I've used Creamique), but just aside from performance, the MX-2 is a little safer to use - especially on NB/SB and VGA. AS5 has silver in it, which is electrically conductive, so if you are not careful in applying (ie- you put too much and it goes over when HSF is attached), it could cause a short - MX2 is not electrically conductive, so your safer using that.

I really dont care about how easy it is to use, electrical safety or preperation requirement. I can garentee I did as good a possible job as is possbile. I know what I'm doing and I do it correctly. I did this test for my own benefit to see if a hunch I had was true and I thought that others might like to benefit from it.

An update: I went out to lectures and came back and cold booted the PC, room temp and air temps similar to this morning and it went to a post boot temp (after jumping to ~50 during startup) of 33 deg C. The same as the MX-2. Core is at 42 the now, same as the MX-2.
