Nice review, and definatly a nice card. I have always liked custom cooling of HIS cards, because it looks great for hardware geeks that like to look at their hardware
and for the cooling capabilities at very silent levels ![]()

I have one running on a M-ATX board fine with enough room for one more PCI card.

I love these 3850s that overclock to near 3870 speeds. They are great for the budget people out there that overclock to get their performance.

ten out of ten for spotting the pretty copper coloured paint.. it seems to have fooled others into thinking it is all copper.. if that 850 core really is gaming stable it goes higher than the early 3870 cards did.. the cores must be getting better.. especially if it does it on lower volts.. quite remarkable.. trog

Some people don't like dual-slot cooling, or don't have the room for it. I used to be one of those people that didn't like dual-slot cooling. Loosing 2 PCI slots when I run two graphics cards sucks when you have to fit a RAID card, TV Tuner, wireless card, and Sound Card in the machine. Heck, just getting a dual graphics card capable motherboard these days almost guarantees that I have to cut something(the wireless card hasn't been in use in my main rig in over a year.
Some people like dual-slot cooling, others don't. Which is why it is listed as both a postive and a negative(I assume).

Nice card by HIS, and excellent comprehensive review by W1zzard, bravo!
I have to say, I'd really prefer if HIS used a copper cooling solution instead that would bring temps down a lot. Definately on the X1950PRO it had a Copper cooler, I wonder why most mfgrs are now using anodized aluminium... I'd say that the HD3850 is stil a better purchase than the 8800GS for several reasons, but they are pretty much open to much criticism.

Hey I think the prices need to be updated... 3870 is selling for $199 on Newegg, and the 3850 is even cheaper!

They painted the coolers LOL. That's just damn wrong to try and fool people that they are made of copper IMO.
