just had alook at some with the RBE bios editor..

the fastest 3870 card that can be bought.. the HIS turbo thing.. comes clocked at 850 core.. way higher than reference..

ati reference type 3870 card.. comes clocked at 777 core..

my odd gigabyte 3870 with gddr3 memory.. 777 core

as listed gpu voltage

HIS 850 core.. 1.3... lower than average..

ati refence 777 core 1.327.. average

odd gigabyte 3870/3850 mongrel.. 777 core 1.241

the average 3850 core voltage.. 1.241..

none of this makes a great deal of sense to me.. he he he

Haha my HIS non-turbo runs default at 1.3 versus the normal 1.35, and at 1.36 with the pencil mod, it will do 877.5 core. Nothing more though, even up to 1.52V. Just crashes.

I think maybe the HIS cards don't like (or need) a lot of voltage.

Hey Trog, I've been lurking here reading up on the 3800 series bios and I thought I'd post a few of my findings.

For me, both the HIS cards and the GeCube O.C. Edition 3870 have hard coded voltages. Regardless of what you set in the bios the card suppies a different voltage set by the resistor/chip layout on the PCB. My GeCube doesn't even have a 2D power circuit because by design it's not supposed to enter 2D mode, but by force flashing a different bios it can, albeit without dropping the voltage, just the clocks.

The HIS bios operates in the same manner from what I can tell, only 3D clocks and bios set voltage has no effect at all.

What do you think?

I've had a different experience. My HIS IceQ3 non-turbo has the 2D and 3D clocks and voltages. My chip just doesn't like anything over 1.36ish V. Tested with a multimeter.

I also found something funky with the HIS ICEQ Turbo bios...can't vMod to 1.5v with it or I get black screen and 0v vGPU when I initiate 3D. However, on the GeCube bios or any others (I also tried the Sapphire .77) it works fine up to the max I've tried, being 1.52v...?

vMod as in through the BIOS or with a pencil/hardmod? I've done the pencil mod so far, even though my HIS supports software voltage control.

DanishDevil,

I am still of the belief that yours is more a heat issue. Don't ask to explain, cuz I don't know. I'm thinking if you got some aftermarket cooling you'd be straight.

@ kup,

My reference HIS cards have no problem with extreme voltages. Mine is hard moded. I've had it up to 1.56 without issue.

Yeah, it could be. Maybe the chips that HIS uses on their cards (including mine) don't like to go over 80C or something and that's why I black out after a period of time in 3D mode. Wanna buy me a watercooling kit so I can test your theory Spankenstein?

...

i think u may be right at least with the power colour card.. one speed all the time i think.. as for the others.. they either have super chips that run at lower voltages or they are hard wired.. dunno.. its what i am trying to find out..

my mongrel gigabyte is an interesting one.. its 2 d voltages are very low only 1.134.. and its 3870 core speed seems to be achieved with 3850 voltages..

again either hard wired or a super chip.. dunno..

trog

ps.. i know the reference card has overvolt protection.. i had mine not booting several times when i was at it with the pencil..

Do I want to? Sure I do...

Can I afford to?

No way, Jose!

But I do kinda agree that these chips seem to fart-out under rather modest temps compared to earlier/larger process chips.

I mean editing the voltages in the bios does nothing for my actual voltages, only a pencil or hard mod changes them.

And thank you for the welcome and the compliment! :toast:

Interesting, I've read of other HIS cards that stuggle with about 1.45v+, there is the OCP mod to allow pretty much unlimited voltage but that shouldn't really be needed until about 1.8v on Phase...

True. I don't think I'll be attempting that kind of voltage with my stock cooler.

Spankenstein, is your HIS the non-IceQ3 version? I know they do make a reference one, I just can't find it. Prolly disct'ed it.

Yup! I got them before Christmas last year. They may not be making them anymore.

Buying things when they first come out is funny: they MAY have over-engineered them to help build their reputation OR the may have rushed some crap out the door to make a quick buck.

You just never know!;)

one of mine is an HIS they had them out first.. pure plain red with no sticker on it.. they never had time.. he he.. pure reference design as well..

it dosnt bug out at over 90 C either.. but a few degrees cooler did enable another very small 5 or so mhz to be sqeezed out of it.. i had two both behaved in the same way i couldnt tell em apart..

the later HIS are not entirely reference design..

That's what I figured. I've noticed some subtle differences in them. Maybe I should take the shroud off the cooler and put a 92mm ACRyan fan blowing through the heatsink to see if I can get the temps down and see if it likes a little more voltage. I'm gonna start a project log on my 3870 and work on it this weekend - maybe you guys could help me out and give me ideas?

No matter how many different angles I tried to point my 120mm 86cfm fan or 120mm 38cfm fan at my top card, my temps got worse because the turbulence created in the 1/8th inch space between then choked the flow of air getting into the cooler.
My bottom card is quite happy and idles at 29C with my bottom mounted triple rad blowing on it.

I'm going to remove the card's fan and shroud so it's simply the ram, vreg, and gpu heatsinks, and set a fan blowing towards the back of my case with its center lined up with the card's PCB. That way, the single fan will hopefully force air through the heatsink and across the entire card.
