With the 1024bit memory interface, you'll only end up with a more than 2 times more xpensive and very complex PCB

nope... much much more expensive .. my guess is x4 at least. routing 1024 signals around is much more complex than 512

well 256bit is practiclly free these days and doesnt cost much at all over 128 or 64bit.

price is fairly constant because its just a complex maze of copper traces

5$ won't get you even a single GDDR3 chip

~$4.50 for a single 512mbit gddr3 memory chip 1.0ns (not in single quantities of course)

the crytek engine has allot of bugs that need to be worked out of it before its even remotely playable....

imo it does matter, ill make an example.

a 9800GX2 is 2x16 ROPS, 2x128 sp's and 2x512mb ram over 2x256-bit bus while one gpu can only access one memory, and all this is linked by a scalable link interface.

so the question is, will it perform as well as a single gpu that natively has 32 ROPS, 256 sp's, and 1024mb of ram over a 512 bit bus?

imo the answer is a definite no, for scaling reasons and others, like a core 2 duo at 3ghz doesnt exactly mean you have a 6ghz computer.

so yes the 9800GX2 does possess a total 512 bit memory interface, and a total of 1024 mb ram, but for reasons i went in to, its not really a true 512bit, yada yada yada.

sorry to bring it back up again, but i think its an interesting subject guys

thats what i was thinking even thought the bus combined is 512bit its not going to scale that way...

yes in a way, but 8x32bit bus, or 8x64bit as long as they all talk to the same core, in reality it functions actully more effiecnt than a pure bus. This is why they started doing this, the Geforce2 started showing that the modern cores could not be feed with enough bandwith even with a 128bit bus, so with Geforce3 they did 4x32bit for the highen, giving each set of 2 a dedicated 32bit access point allowing better memory managment.

granted price for the copper is, with the massive reduction in memory prices recently ram is fairly cheap. You can put 8 256bit chips on a card for a mere 36 bucks, spend a dollor on copper and you have a 256bit bus for around 37 bucks. Id guess the total cost for a card like the 8800GTS is about 120 bucks tops, paying for core and PCB, plus memory. While the cost for say a 9600GT is about 110 bucks.
